{"id":34662,"date":"2025-11-15T00:51:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-15T00:51:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/34662\/"},"modified":"2025-11-15T00:51:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-15T00:51:10","slug":"youths-set-to-speak-with-pope-leo-share-concerns-experiences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/34662\/","title":{"rendered":"Youths Set to Speak With Pope Leo, Share Concerns, Experiences"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">By Matthew Gambino \u2022 Posted November 14, 2025 <\/p>\n<p>In one week, American Catholics will witness an unprecedented event as Pope Leo XIV will speak in real time from Rome with some 15,000 youths gathered in Indianapolis for the 2025 National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Millions more will watch live on EWTN \u2013 the exclusive broadcast partner for the event \u2013 via the network\u2019s platforms including its broadcast and YouTube channels, plus streaming and social media platforms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Archbishop Nelson P\u00e9rez led a press conference in Baltimore Nov. 12 with key organizers of the conference during the annual meetings of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in the city this week.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The event titled \u201cPope Leo Live: A Call to Unity and Peace!\u201d will cap the three-day youth conference Nov. 20-22 drawing Catholic young people ages 14-18 from around the country and the adults who minister to them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Calling Pope Leo\u2019s digital encounter at the NCYC a \u201chistoric moment\u201d and a \u201cpowerful opportunity for young people,\u201d Archbishop P\u00e9rez said the pontiff \u201cwill do something for the young people of our country that has never been done on such a grand scale by any previous pope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The archbishop explained that on Friday, Nov. 21 at 10:15 a.m., Pope Leo will begin an encounter of at least 45 minutes with an address to the youths followed by a question-and-answer dialogue with several of the teens present.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At that time they will express to the pope \u201ctheir concerns, their experiences within their heart; what makes them happy and joyful, but what also challenges their hearts as well,\u201d said Archbishop P\u00e9rez.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While the encounter will be witnessed live in Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, youths will be gathering in their own communities to view the event, including in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Six archdiocesan Catholic high schools \u2013 two in Philadelphia and one in each suburban county \u2013 will host what are called <a href=\"https:\/\/catholicchurchofphila.org\/press-releases\/archdiocesan-high-schools-throughout-the-five-county-region-to-hold-pope-rallies-for-pope-leo-live-a-call-to-unity-and-peace-and-join-historic-moment-with-pope-leo-xiv\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cPope Rallies\u201d<\/a> to gather all the students together for the 45-minute dialogue with Pope Leo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With the young people joining from their schools and adults from their homes, millions are expected to witness the Pope\u2019s \u201ccall to unity and peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Explaining more details with Archbishop P\u00e9rez on the press conference\u2019s panel was Cardinal Christophe Pierre, the Holy See\u2019s apostolic nuncio to the U.S.; Archbishop Charles Tompson of Indianapolis and host of the NCYC; Montse Alvarado, head of EWTN News; and Christina Llamas, head of the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry, which is presenting the conference.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In her remarks she said the conference and the pope\u2019s presence show that \u201cthe Church is listening, not just speaking. This encounter is not a media event, it is (a) moment where one universal Church walks with the young Church in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The conference is not only a gathering to encourage young people, but it also points out two challenges.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cToday Catholic youth ministry stands at a crossroads,\u201d Llamas said. \u201cThe need for accompaniment has never been greater yet the investment of time and resources doesn\u2019t always reflect that reality. Many young people love the Church but they struggle to find a place where their voices are heard, their gifts are entrusted and their questions are welcomed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Despite these challenges and the dilemma of fewer paid youth ministers than in the past and \u201cgrowing secular pressures,\u201d according to Llamas, she said \u201cthere are powerful signs of renewal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Youth ministry throughout the Church in the U.S. is evolving from programs to relationships in which young people are becoming \u201cprotagonists in their own faith journey,\u201d Llamas said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She added that teens are \u201cstepping away from the noise of the world to encounter Christ and one another. That choice alone is a sign of hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Archbishop P\u00e9rez anticipates that the questions and concerns of young people speaking directly with Pope Leo will echo the thoughts of youths he has encountered in his own ministry as a priest and bishop.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cYoung people want a place in the church,\u201d the archbishop said, adding that they believe older generations of Catholics don\u2019t fully welcome them. \u201cThey want to be seen, heard and valued. They want to be loved by the Church. We say we love them, and we do. But somehow we need to demonstrate that in a better way.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cYou don\u2019t get much better than the pope coming in live to say to them that the Church loves them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cardinal Pierre offered his insight into this generational tension by observing that many older Catholics encountered Jesus Christ through their family and Church structures like parishes and schools. But that experience is often no longer the case with the young.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cNow a lot of young people are encountering Jesus outside the Church,\u201d including through the media, Cardinal Pierre said. \u201cIt\u2019s a new world, a new religious experience. Which Church will they come to? Will they be received by the Church to go out and deepen their experience?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Church must continue to reach out as Pope Francis taught. \u201cIt is not the usual Church experience\u201d for youths, the cardinal said. \u201cWe are not just entertaining inside the house.
