Expected rain forced the District 2 Singles Championships to move indoors for the semifinals and finals.<\/p>\n
On Monday, the best girls tennis players \u2014 all representing the Lackawanna League \u2014 will compete for gold medals and a trip to the PIAA Championships at 1 p.m. at the Birchwood Racquet Club.<\/p>\n
The champions advance to the state tournament that starts Oct. 31.<\/p>\n
Montrose junior Cara Evans is undefeated this season and is the No. 1 seed for the Class 2A tournament. She advanced to the semifinals, where she will face Scranton Prep senior Emma Cuck.<\/p>\n
Evans is 18-0 this season playing at No. 1 singles. She won three matches on the first day of the tournament and lost only one game.<\/p>\n
Last season, Evans finished as the runner-up to three-time PIAA Class 2A champion Ilana Rosenthal.<\/p>\n
Cuck, who played at No. 3 singles for the first three years of her career, moved up to No. 2 this season. She is 19-0 overall this season and has a career singles record of 77-1.<\/p>\n
In the other semifinal, Scranton Prep junior Lily Lengyel will play Montrose freshman Anna Evans, Cara\u2019s younger sister.<\/p>\n
Lengyel is 18-1 this season, with the only loss coming in a three-set showdown with Cara Evans in the regular season. She also lost to Cara Evans in the District 2 semifinals last season.<\/p>\n
Anna Evans had a successful debut season at No. 2 singles for the Lady Meteors. She enters the semifinals with a record of 17-2.<\/p>\n
The Class 3A semifinals, like the Class 2A final four, are all from the Lackawanna League.<\/p>\n
Abington Heights senior Sona Hanumali won two matches to reach the semifinals. She improved to 19-2 at No. 1 singles this season.<\/p>\n
Hanumali will play West Scranton\u2019s Katie Fahey. She won two matches on the first day of the tournament to improve to 12-6. The two met in the regular season, and Hanumali won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.<\/p>\n
Amishi Amit, the No. 2 singles player at Abington Heights, reached the semifinals and will play No. 2 seed Ella Swingle of Valley View.<\/p>\n
Amit is 17-2 after her two wins on the first day.<\/p>\n
Swingle played at No. 1 singles for the Cougars.
