The union represents bus, trolley and subway operators. Local 234 President William Vera told<a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/6abc.com\/post\/septa-union-members-vote-authorize-strike\/18162098\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a06ABC<\/a>\u00a0that he&#8217;d like to see changes to SEPTA&#8217;s sick leave policy in the new agreement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 15.36px;\">The union is seeking a two-year deal, which coincides with the two-year funding agreement that SEPTA and the state government reached to ease the transit authority&#8217;s budget shortfalls.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 15.36px;\">SEPTA workers last went on strike in 2016. It lasted six days.\u00a0But the union came close to a work stoppage last year, when it threatened to strike alongside two other unions \u2014 SMART Local 1594 and\u00a0<a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.phillyvoice.com\/philly-city-workers-union-agreement-afscme-district-council-33-cherelle-parker\/\" style=\"font-size: 1.2em;\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AFSCME District Council 33<\/a>. SEPTA and Local 234 reached a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillyvoice.com\/septa-transit-police-strike-ends-tentative-contract\/\" style=\"font-size: 1.2em;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one-year deal<\/a>\u00a0that included a 5% wage increase, averting a strike.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 15.36px;\">Sunday&#8217;s strike authorization comes as SEPTA extended Regional Rail train cancellations on the Chestnut Hill West and Fox Chase lines into Monday.\u00a0SEPTA met Friday&#8217;s federally-mandated deadline to inspect its 223 Silverliner IV cars, but\u00a0<a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/transportation\/septa-safety-inspections-done-fires-repairs-20251114.html\" style=\"font-size: 15.36px;\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">only 76 cars were back in service<\/a>\u00a0on Friday. Many need to be repaired.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 15.36px;\">SEPTA said it may take until mid-December before Regional Rail service returns to normal. Canceled trains have resulted in crowded stations and skipped stops, particularly those close to Center City.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 15.36px;\">The Regional Rail disruptions have been part of a\u00a0turbulent year for SEPTA. Facing a budget crisis, SEPTA drastically <a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.phillyvoice.com\/septa-cuts-service-commuter-recommendations\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">slashed service<\/a>\u00a0in late August, only to have a judge order it to be <a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.phillyvoice.com\/septa-service-restored-penndot-funding-shapiro\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fully restored<\/a> in SEPTA.\u00a0A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillyvoice.com\/septa-budget-fare-increase-september-14-full-service-penndot\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fare increase<\/a>\u00a0remains in place. Then,\u00a0the Federal Railroad Administration ordered SEPTA to inspect its Silverliner IV cars due to several electrical fires.
