{"id":38895,"date":"2025-11-19T20:26:20","date_gmt":"2025-11-19T20:26:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/38895\/"},"modified":"2025-11-19T20:26:20","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T20:26:20","slug":"pennsylvania-group-announces-its-primarying-john-fetterman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/38895\/","title":{"rendered":"Pennsylvania group announces it&#8217;s primarying John Fetterman"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Pennsylvania Working Families Party announced it will be launching a campaign to primary Sen. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/john-fetterman\/\">John Fetterman<\/a> (D-PA) in 2028, though they have not selected a candidate to run against him yet.<\/p>\n<p>Though the WFP initially supported Fetterman in his 2022 Senate race against <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/mehmet-oz\/\">Mehmet Oz<\/a>, the party called him a \u201cTrump-enabling corporate Democrat\u201d in their Tuesday announcement. The decision to primary Fetterman comes in the wake of his support for the GOP-led funding bill to end the government shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re primarying John Fetterman. Last week, Fetterman once again sold out working Pennsylvanians. He was the deciding vote for a Republican budget bill that will strip healthcare from over 400,000 Pennsylvanians,\u201d the group wrote <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PAWorkFamilies\/status\/1990802307399967108?s=20\">on X<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Without any selected candidate to run against Fetterman, the group is holding \u201ccandidate trainings\u201d to find their person, organizing volunteers, and asking for donations.<\/p>\n<p>Fetterman, one of eight Senate Democratic caucus members who broke with their party on Obamacare subsidy demands to vote with Republicans to end the shutdown, has sparred with his own party on occasion this year. <\/p>\n<p>He defended his vote to reopen the government throughout the shutdown, saying, \u201cI\u2019m the guy that\u2019s gonna consistently vote for country over party,\u201d while also voicing his support for extending the Obamacare subsidies after the shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c2 MILLION Pennsylvanians depend on SNAP to feed their families. For me, it\u2019s hungry Americans over party. Paying our military over party. Paying Capitol Police and federal workers over party. I choose country over party,\u201d Fetterman wrote <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SenFettermanPA\/status\/1981002129717551427?s=20\">on X<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to getting criticized by Democrats over his shutdown vote, he has blasted Democrats for \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/politics\/3449949\/fetterman-slams-democratic-party-judgmental-virtue-signaling\/\">virtue signaling<\/a>,\u201d called the Trump administration\u2019s strikes in Iran \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3450778\/john-fetterman-on-iran-praises-entirely-appropriate-strikes\/\">entirely appropriate<\/a>,\u201d and has <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/3489547\/fetterman-optimistic-trump-tariffs-after-criticism\/\">signaled support<\/a> for President Donald Trump\u2019s moves on trade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe deserve real working class leadership in the U.S. Senate, not a Trump-enabling corporate Democrat. Senator Fetterman has turned his back on us, and that\u2019s why the Pennsylvania Working Families Party is committed to recruiting and supporting a primary challenge to him in 2028,\u201d the WFP <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/actionnetwork.org\/forms\/help-pa-wfp-primary-john-fetterman-get-involved-here\/\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Fetterman, who has been open about his mental and physical health struggles, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/3888584\/fetterman-released-from-hospital-after-fall\/\">recently fell<\/a> due to a ventricular fibrillation flare-up while on a walk in Pennsylvania. The incident came just days after the senator released his memoir <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/3486058\/john-fetterman-book-unfettered-memoir\/\">Unfettered<\/a>, in which he opens up about his May 2022 stroke and his battle with depression.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/3886009\/centrist-democrats-warn-against-partisanship-congress-after-shutdown\/\">CENTRIST DEMOCRATS WARN AGAINST RISE OF PARTISANSHIP IN CONGRESS AFTER BACKING DEAL TO END SHUTDOWN<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The senator is not up for reelection until 2028, but there have been <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/10\/16\/john-fetterman-senate-primary-pennsylvania\">rumblings<\/a> among Pennsylvania Democrats about opportunities to replace him, as some look back to Fetterman\u2019s previous primary challenger, former Rep. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spotlightpa.org\/news\/2025\/06\/fetterman-lamb-pennsylvania-democrats-progressive-split\/\">Connor Lamb<\/a> (D-PA), with hopes that he might give it another go.<\/p>\n<p>Fetterman\u2019s team did not respond to the Washington Examiner\u2018s requests for comment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Pennsylvania Working Families Party announced it will be launching a campaign to primary Sen.
