{"id":39377,"date":"2025-11-20T06:39:07","date_gmt":"2025-11-20T06:39:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/39377\/"},"modified":"2025-11-20T06:39:07","modified_gmt":"2025-11-20T06:39:07","slug":"geisinger-in-contentious-battle-to-expand-operations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/39377\/","title":{"rendered":"Geisinger in contentious battle to expand operations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE\/WYOU) \u2014 Geisinger is now looking to expand its operations in Lackawanna County, but some residents aren\u2019t too happy about it. 28\/22 News reporter Joe Mason got a closer look at the company\u2019s plans and a response from the community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In a city council public meeting on Tuesday night, Geisinger officials and community members sounded off on the health system\u2019s plan to expand its operations in Scranton, but the project can\u2019t move ahead without a change to the city\u2019s zoning ordinance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A release outlines plans for 41 inpatient beds, 19 postpartum beds, and 24 new emergency treatment areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Some residents are opposed to the lack of transparency from the city council on the expansion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIf you want something, you need to let everyone know what it is that you want so that we can make an informed decision on whether it\u2019s appropriate for that neighborhood,\u201d Scranton resident Laura Augustini told 28\/22 News.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI hope that every resident in the Hill Section comes down and voices their opinion, and I don\u2019t think it\u2019s going to be very favorable,\u201d Scranton resident Joan Hodowanitz added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Other community members support it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a class=\"link  yahoo-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/developer-continues-push-data-center-042409278.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Developer continues push for data center, appeals denied zoning application;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Developer continues push for data center, appeals denied zoning application <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cPass these zoning changes so when the opportunity presents itself, as it seems to be presenting itself with Geisinger, they\u2019ll be able to make due and do what\u2019s necessary to continue to provide quality healthcare for the city of Scranton,\u201d President, Scranton Chamber of Commerce, Bob Durkin, voiced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThey\u2019re unfortunately limited by their facility, and it is time to let them have the flexibility to expand,\u201d Rich Foley, Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Geisinger officials say there\u2019s a critical need that needs to be met.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThese improvements, and I cannot stress this enough, represent the absolute end of the line of what we can do with the hospital as it stands today,\u201d Megan Brosious, Geisinger Chief Operating Officer, explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIf the zoning amendment is denied, we will be forced to look elsewhere in the county to expand. We are out of options, and the city and county need access to more care,\u201d Nick Coleman with Geisinger Community Medical Center Clinical Operations warned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Council member Thomas Schuster says Geisinger officials could work with the zoning hearing board on a special exemption or variance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWe are aware that\u2019s a process you can take, but in order for us to do that, we would have to invest a significant amount of the dollars that we have allocated for this project,\u201d Brosious explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The resolution was tabled for further discussion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti says she will propose changes to the ordinance this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">She says, \u201cAs our local hospital systems face ongoing uncertainty, it\u2019s our responsibility to do all we can to facilitate quality healthcare in Scranton.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
