{"id":40100,"date":"2025-11-20T23:21:23","date_gmt":"2025-11-20T23:21:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/40100\/"},"modified":"2025-11-20T23:21:23","modified_gmt":"2025-11-20T23:21:23","slug":"erie-county-to-appeal-80m-court-judgment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/40100\/","title":{"rendered":"Erie County to appeal $80M court judgment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Attorneys for Erie County are planning to appeal an $80 million court judgment.<\/p>\n<p>Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz confirmed Thursday a judge recently ruled against the county in a lawsuit from the estate of Darryl Boyd.<\/p>\n<p>Before his death earlier this year, Boyd was a member of <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrumlocalnews.com\/nys\/buffalo\/news\/2020\/12\/03\/buffalo-5-back-in-court-after-40--years\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the \u201cBuffalo Five,\u201d<\/a> a group of men wrongfully convicted in\u00a0the 1976 murder of William Crawford. Boyd was just 16 years old at the time.<\/p>\n<p>He spent nearly three decades behind bars before being released on parole. A judge <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrumlocalnews.com\/nys\/buffalo\/news\/2021\/08\/18\/two-members-of-the--buffalo-5--get-their-murder-charges-dropped-after-more-than-40-years-and-will-be-spared-new-trial\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">overturned the conviction in 2021<\/a> and Boyd filed a lawsuit the following year, alleging the Erie County District Attorney\u2019s Office withheld evidence in the case.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If we were to pay it out of the operating budget, we&#8217;d have to dramatically raise taxes or cut many services, significantly,\u201d Poloncarz said. \u201cIf we were to borrow it, we&#8217;d have to pay a judgment bond, which means it would be more than $80 million in the long run.
