The Berks County 4-H Hippology Team won the Pennsylvania 4-H Hippology Contest in May, advancing to two national contests.<\/p>\n
The team recently competed at the Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, Ohio, and the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup in Louisville, Ky.<\/p>\n
Angelina Shumaker of Reading, Kamryn Witman of Hamburg, Megan Salamone of Reading and Natalee Fryer of Bernville, coached by 4-H volunteer Colleen Witman, have been working hard practicing, studying, and preparing as a team for these two competitions.<\/p>\n
Hippology is the study of horses. In a hippology contest, members must take a written exam, judge horses, have identification stations, and answer a team problem.<\/p>\n
At the Quarter Horse Congress 4-H Hippology Contest in October, the team placed 2nd in the judging phase of the contest. Shumaker placed 10th individually in the judging phase.<\/p>\n
At the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup Hippology Contest in November, the team placed 8th in the judging phase and 10th in the station phase.<\/p>\n
Administered in Pennsylvania by Penn State Extension, 4-H is a community of more than six million young people across America learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills.
