{"id":40229,"date":"2025-11-21T01:56:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-21T01:56:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/40229\/"},"modified":"2025-11-21T01:56:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-21T01:56:09","slug":"lackawanna-county-treatment-court-celebrates-experience-strength-and-hope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/40229\/","title":{"rendered":"Lackawanna County Treatment Court celebrates experience, strength and hope"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As more than 50 men and women made their way across the stage on Thursday evening to celebrate their graduation from Lackawanna County Treatment Court, Judge Michael J. Barrasse took time for comment on each one.<\/p>\n<p>Barrasse said the court\u2019s team had had doubts about some of the graduates\u2019 ability to complete the program. Some other students resisted at first but then became passionate about recovery. There were even one or two who had walked across the stage more than once.<\/p>\n<p>But, regardless of how each began their process to recovery, each one was graduating \u2014 walking across the stage amid applause and handshakes.<\/p>\n<p>Each graduate had their name printed on a paper attached to a seat at the Peoples Security Bank Theater at Lackawanna College.\u00a0 No one else could sit in their seat. (REBECCA PARTICKA\/STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER)\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#\" class=\"icon-enlarge mng-gallery-fullscreen-expand\" aria-label=\"Expand fullscreen slideshow\">Expand<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gagnon likened the court\u2019s staff to guardrails in her life.\u00a0She may have veered left or right and it certainly wasn\u2019t easy, but treatment court staff were there to push her back onto the right path \u2014 not once, but as many times as needed.<\/p>\n<p>Because they didn\u2019t give up on her, Gagnon didn\u2019t give up on herself.<\/p>\n<p>And that, she said, came after she originally stood before Barrasse and told him she was a lost cause.<\/p>\n<p>Gagnon is looking forward to her future with hope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a support group now to figure out life with,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019ve survived this chapter and we\u2019re preparing for the next.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Graduate Dana Hammond also shared her life story.<\/p>\n<p>After her parents\u2019 divorce, she remembers waiting for her father to come for a visit, but he didn\u2019t show up.<\/p>\n<p>When her mother remarried, the family moved to another area where Hammond felt she didn\u2019t fit in with most other students.\u00a0But there were people that she did fit in with \u2014 those who were using drugs.<\/p>\n<p>As long as she could get drugs for people, she had friends.<\/p>\n<p>She stopped going to school and dropped out as a high school senior.<\/p>\n<p>She got pregnant, she had a baby, she went to jail.<\/p>\n<p>And when she got out of jail, she kept using drugs.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, she kept using for 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>And, at 41, she faced more drug charges.<\/p>\n<p>But this time around, she was grateful.
