\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMissouri City officials took the first step toward earning additional tax revenue from the Sienna Management District.<\/p>\n
What residents need to know<\/p>\n
At a Nov. 17 meeting, Missouri City City Council unanimously approved the first reading of the ordinance to annex the district, which was created in 2016 through a strategic city partnership agreement.<\/p>\n
The district is being considered for annexation due to zoning confusion and because it is already partially within city limits, City Attorney E. Joyce Iyamu said.<\/p>\n
The item was first discussed at an Oct. 20 meeting<\/a>, when council tabled the item until after the Nov. 4 election<\/a>.<\/p>\n Why it matters<\/p>\n The annexation would expand the city’s boundaries, putting officials in charge of the area’s activities such as law enforcement, firefighting and animal services, while allowing the city to collect an estimated $540,236 in additional net revenues, Iyamu said.<\/p>\n The 57-acre district has three apartment complexes, each valued at about $40 million, Iyamu said. The complexes house about 1,759 people in 860 units, and they would likely fall within District C.<\/p>\n “><\/p>\n What else?<\/p>\n If City Council decides to annex the Sienna district, Mayor Pro Tem Sonya Brown-Marshall said they should also consider redistricting to ensure that residents are equally represented.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019d have to honestly get to the point where we start looking at trying to figure out a way to level out the numbers,\u201d Brown-Marshall said at the Oct. 20 meeting. \u201cEventually we\u2019re going to have to take a look at [redistricting].\u201d<\/p>\n What\u2019s next?<\/p>\n While no set date has been set for the ordinance\u2019s second reading, City Council will meet again Dec. 1.
