There\u2019s an emerging invasive species<\/a> that, for now, has gone away with the warm weather.<\/p>\n

But they\u2019re expected to pop up again next year. And they\u2019ve been spotted in Pennsylvania<\/a> before.<\/p>\n

USA Today reports<\/a> that the Joro spider \u2014 those rather large, black-and-yellow arachnids native to Asian countries like Japan that can move around by using their webs like parachutes \u2014 is usually spotted from August through October. <\/p>\n

Joro spider eggs tend to hatch between May and June \u2014 with female spiders laying about one to five egg masses containing 500 eggs apiece \u2014 meaning that the eight-legged creature is expected to make a return come next summer.<\/p>\n

An observation listed on iNaturalist pegs<\/a> a Joro spider sighting in Pennsylvania, near Doylestown. There\u2019s a chance, then, that the species will be spotted in the Keystone State again during its peak season in August 2026. <\/p>\n

But don\u2019t worry: North Carolina State University explains<\/a> that while Joro spiders might creep some people out, they\u2019re harmless to humans. <\/p>\n

\u201cThankfully, despite their large size, these spiders post no threat to humans,\u201d the university explains. \u201cTheir venom, a mild neurotoxin, is designed to paralyze small flying insects, and causes similar symptoms to those of a bee sting in most cases.\u201d <\/p>\n

And \u00e0 la everyone\u2019s favorite, the spotted lanternfly<\/a>, Joro Watch states <\/a>that the Joro spider has been able to spread so quickly throughout the United States thanks to humans unknowingly transporting either them or there eggs to new locations.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s recommended that \u2014 if you should see a Joro spider \u2014 report it<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\u201cKnowing where the spiders are being found (or not found!) and other information helps scientists with their research,\u201d Joro Watch says. \u201cThey can use the data to see where the spiders are spreading to, the habitats they are found in, and more.<\/p>\n
