{"id":46151,"date":"2025-11-27T13:22:19","date_gmt":"2025-11-27T13:22:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/46151\/"},"modified":"2025-11-27T13:22:19","modified_gmt":"2025-11-27T13:22:19","slug":"easton-renames-historic-black-cemetery-after-2-community-trailblazers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/46151\/","title":{"rendered":"Easton renames historic Black cemetery after 2 community trailblazers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SWD6MCRM2ZHERA3S4NMQELNTHU\">Easton is working to restore the site of a historic Black cemetery, and two women in the Easton community will be memorialized in its name.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3V57K7JTQRHZ3C52H4EWKDUERI\">Easton City Council voted Wednesday to rename <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lehighvalleylive.com\/news\/2024\/06\/new-designs-for-eastons-nesquehoning-park-will-honor-black-residents-buried-there.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Nesquehoning Memorial Park<\/a> in honor of two prominent local figures. The park will be known as The Clarine Boyer and Frances Ketchen Nesquehoning Memorial Park, following a resolution unanimously approved by council. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5ZKTLYA4SNBK3D2BTGIAGQXM6Q\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lehighvalleylive.com\/easton\/2017\/06\/clarine_boyer_dedication_eanc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Clarine Boyer<\/a>, a longtime resident who died Nov. 22, 2002, was a community activist who worked closely with local civil rights leaders. She was a founding member of the South Side Neighborhood Center and a longtime member of the Easton Branch of the NAACP. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IHAKI7MR7ZFN5A2QA3C55P4BAA\">Boyer advocated for racial equality and served as a mentor to many in the community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ESVUVE5WE5F5JFKGSUTK4N632E\"><a href=\"https:\/\/obits.lehighvalleylive.com\/us\/obituaries\/etpa\/name\/frances-ketchen-obituary?id=12723253&amp;_gl=1*r6uff4*_gcl_au*MTcyNDE2MTEzMi4xNzY0MTcyOTg5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Frances Ketchen<\/a> held several pioneering roles in Easton, including becoming the first Black cashier in Downtown Easton. She was the first Black person to serve on the Easton Area School Board and the first to run for city council. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QJBIFS7KBNEAFMQQK2BHG5WG2M\">She also worked for the Easton Redevelopment Authority, and was a family caseworker at Family Counseling of Easton. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5L6PJBHACRG7RDHRXT34AWBKHY\">Ketchen volunteered on multiple regional boards, including those affiliated with vocational-technical education, the South Side Neighborhood Center, United Way of the Lehigh Valley and Shiloh Manor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TIHMYAZ3YRA6JDFJQUY7KBAC2I\">She died on Sept. 4, 2011. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GDAJXIFY6VENVAOVBRS6JYB4D4\">Vice Mayor Ken Brown introduced the resolution, stating they were \u201ctwo very strong women in our community some time ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"37JQTLUA75EN5GXB23PFOWPXSU\">The city first learned in early 2021 that a \u201cBlack-only\u201d cemetery likely existed underneath a South Side pocket park, a finding later confirmed through ground-penetrating radar. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"V2MVAGUJAVGZJMAF23MCALMOAM\">Initial scans identified an estimated nine burial sites. That number is now estimated at 32.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IIP545QJXBAOXAWD6EUR23PSGE\">Current improvements include 32 grave markers, interpretive signage, walking paths, seating, new fencing and masonry work. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BX4FGO7OUBDXXNR2MNPP3J4AHY\">According to the city, construction is underway and expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
