The Erie County Legislature has made changes to Erie County Executive Mark\u00a0Poloncarz’s 2026\u00a0proposed budget.\u00a0<\/p>\n
One item axed from the budget was $20 million to start the design and engineering process for a new county jail.<\/p>\n
The idea is for a new\u00a0$430 million\u00a0jail and holding center in Alden.\u00a0Erie County Sheriff John Garcia says\u00a0$54 million\u00a0in immediate upgrades and repairs are now needed at facilities across the county.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Members of the\u00a0Legislature say property taxes would have\u00a0likely gone\u00a0up\u00a0if they approved the\u00a0$20 million to be spent on that process.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“It\u2019s\u00a0a conservative plan,\u201d said Tim Meyers, (D) Erie County\u00a0legislator.\u00a0\u201cWe\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0know what sales\u00a0tax\u00a0and everything will be.\u00a0These numbers change all year\u00a0long,\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0just trying to get ourselves in the best spot as we can.”<\/p>\n
