A 23 year old year old Erie man is dead after being shot early Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n
Erie City Police responded to an assault in the 400 block of West 8th Street, but when officers arrived at the scene, they found the 23-year-old outside the open driver\u2019s side door of a silver Sedan with a gunshot wound to his leg.<\/p>\n
Police began life-saving measures until emergency personnel arrived on scene to take over.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was transported to Hamot Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, about 1:42 a.m.,\u201d said City of Erie Police Department Deputy Chief Rick Lorah.<\/p>\n
After speaking with witnesses, investigators found that the actual incident happened outside a residence in the 500 block of West 9th Street.<\/p>\n
The victim exited his house, got into an altercation, and was shot once.\u00a0 He then attempted to drive himself to the hospital, but he never made it.<\/p>\n
\u201cSpeaking with witnesses and family members that were there, they stated that the victim had called one of them shortly after he had been shot and advised that he had been shot and was driving himself to the hospital,\u201d said Lorah. \u201cWe do have a large amount of evidence in this case that we\u2019re going to have to take a look at. Obviously, it\u2019s active and ongoing as we speak.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Major Crimes Unit continues to search the home and vehicle.<\/p>\n
In the meantime, the team is asking the public for any \u201csuspicious\u201d surveillance they may have of that area around that time.<\/p>\n
One neighbor who lives a few houses away and was awake during the incident tells us what he heard around one a.m.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was watching TV and heard a loud bang, and I immediately went to my closet window, and a few seconds later I hear screaming first, then the bang, and then somebody got in a car and just sped off,\u201d said Grayson McCaleb, a neighbor.<\/p>\n
McCaleb said it\u2019s usually a quiet area, but he and neighbors agree that crime seems to be increasing.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s been some vandalism of vehicles, there\u2019s been porch theft,\u201d said McCaleb. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely more than I would expect, more than I would want to be here about, but I kind of feel like that\u2019s happening all across the us.\u201d<\/p>\n
