A woman and two children are expected to survive, officials said, after they were found unresponsive and pulled from an Upper Darby home that had a carbon monoxide leak on Saturday night. <\/p>\n
According to police, officers responded along with medical officials on a reported medical emergency along the 200 block of Kingston Road at about 8:20 p.m. on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Upon arrival, police said, first responders detected “a strong odor of gas” at the scene and they radioed in for support from area fire companies.<\/p>\n
Once fire crews arrived, police said, firefighters, equipped with breathing apparatus and gas detectors, entered the building and found a woman and two children inside unresponsive. <\/p>\n
The three people were removed from the building and they were taken to nearby hospitals where, officials said, they were expected to recover. <\/p>\n
Others in the home at the time, police said, were able to escape the property on their own and were unharmed. <\/p>\n
Inside the home, police said, fire crews detected carbon monoxide levels in excess of 1400 parts per million. <\/p>\n
A typical home with a properly adjusted gas stove normally sees carbon monoxide levels of about 5 to 15 parts per million, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency. <\/p>\n
Officials said that the property was secured and ventilated and, following an investigation, the source of the gas leak was found to be a deteriorating chimney flu cap. <\/p>\n
