Georgetown City Council \u2013 during a specially-called
\nmeeting Thursday \u2013 gave first reading approval to an ordinance authorizing
\nratifying and amending the city’s memorandum of understanding regarding
\npotential future public access to the Cannon Street Waterfront.
At issue is a bulkhead that is planned for the
\nwaterfront at the end of Cannon Street on both property owned by the city and
\nby Tarbox Court LLC.
The city entered into a memorandum of understanding
\nwith Tarbox Court in October 2024. The amendment given first reading approval
\nThursday states that once the bulkhead is complete, \u201cthe area between the terminus
\nof Cannon Street and the bulkhead may remain at a lower elevation than surrounding
\ngrades.\u201d
The entire cost of the bulkhead permitting and
\nconstruction will be paid by Tarbox Court, the amendment states.
The amendment also states Tarbox Court \u201cwill provide
\nsafe pedestrian access from Cannon Street to future docks agreed upon for
\npublic use along the Sampit River.\u201d
In a letter to the editor published in October, Perry
\nCollins \u2013 representing Tarbox Court \u2013 said the bulkhead system is needed \u201cto
\nsafeguard the shoreline from stormwater and erosion.\u201d He said it will protect \u201cboth
\nour property and neighboring homes, ensuring environmental responsibility
\nand resilience along the Sampit River.\u201d
During the past year, some residents have expressed
\nconcerns about how the new bulkheads will impact flooding during heavy rains in
\ntheir neighborhood and beyond.
A resident spoke Thursday night saying more time and
\nstudy is needed before the MOU amendments are approved. Here is what she had to
