Visitors to the Everhart Museum on Friday night were in for a surprise as they climbed the steps to the second floor.<\/p>\n
Through the floor\u2019s glass doors, a scene rivaling that of New York City during Fashion Week occupied the gallery space.<\/p>\n
Hosted by the Lackawanna County Arts and Culture Department, the City of Scranton Recycling Department, the Everhart Museum and Swap Scranton, \u201cRepurposed\u201d allowed local creatives, upcyclers and thrifters to showcase their wearable work.<\/p>\n
As models of those works waited in the wings for their time in the spotlight, Swap Scranton founder Hannah Radkiewicz explained the purpose behind the show.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs you explore this show, I challenge you to think about your own relationship with clothing. What stories do your clothes tell? How can you make more intentional choices about what you wear? Take a moment to appreciate the beauty of secondhand, the creativity of repurposed fashion, and the positive impact we\u2019re making together,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
She shared her main motivator for creating Swap Scranton: fast fashion.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe fashion industry is one of the largest polluters in the world, with the average American generating 82 pounds of textile waste per year,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
According to organizers, \u201cfast fashion is the rapid production of cheap, low-quality clothing and one of the greatest causes of waste and global pollution, creating 10% of the world\u2019s carbon emissions. Less than 1% of clothing is recycled back into new clothing due to challenges with the current recycling systems. It can take more than 200 years for synthetic materials like polyester to decompose in a landfill.\u201d<\/p>\n
To combat this waste, artists utilized items like tablecloths, electronic waste and discarded linens to create new and unique fashion pieces, while keeping textile waste from ending up in a landfill.<\/p>\n
During the show, Everhart curator James Lansig announced a new exhibit coming to the upstairs gallery on January 14.
