SPRING TOWNSHIP, Pa.- Developers say the “Broadcast District” will be the first of its kind in the area.<\/p>\n
It’s a mix of homes, stores, and restaurants that will be opening in Berks County for the first time.<\/p>\n
It’s coming to a long-vacant field at Paper Mill and Broadcasting roads in Spring Township.<\/p>\n
“We were told this property is the crown jewel of the township and needed a development plan that reflected its status,” says Devin Tuohey, Co-Managing Partner of the Concordia Group.<\/p>\n
A groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of work on the Broadcast District at Spring Township.<\/p>\n
“This project represents the kind of large-scale, mixed-use development that we’ve not seen here in the past,” says PA Sen. Judy Schwank.<\/p>\n
“I think we’re 85% leased at this point which is really good for the fact that we just broke ground,” Tuohey says.<\/p>\n
Some of those retailers and restaurants include Whole Foods, BJ’s Brewhouse, Sephora, Shake Shack and Ruth’s Chris Steak House. There will also be around 770 homes.<\/p>\n
“We have rental apartments, we’ve got stacked condominiums, we’ve got attached townhomes and detached single family homes,” says Tuohey. “The idea is to create really a community.”<\/p>\n
The design will also include a number of pedestrian trails and walkways, which was important to Penn State Berks.<\/p>\n
“We’re putting in a bunch of new infrastructure and safe pedestrian crossways from the Penn State Berks campus to our community,” says Tuohey. “Our community is going to include a significant [number] of pedestrian trails and our goal is to connect our trail system to Penn State Berks and then eventually through PSU Berks campus to Grings Mill.”<\/p>\n
“Broadcast District at Spring Township is truly going to be a game changer,” says Penn State Berks Chancellor, Radha Pyati. “People throw that word around, but it is going to be a tremendous game changer for Berks County, and for Penn State Berks.”<\/p>\n
The Whole Foods is projected to be the first to open.
