From City of Reading<\/p>\n
History will be honored on Monday, Dec. 15, at 10 a.m., with the dedication of a marker at the site of a Civil War-era hospital in Penn\u2019s Common, now Reading City Park. The event will be held in Reading City Park along Columbus Drive between the basketball courts and the multipurpose building off Washington Street.<\/p>\n
The marker commemorates the service of volunteer nurses and caregivers at the \u201cMilitary Hospital\u201d from 1862 to 1863. The facility was established on the grounds of the Berks County Fairgrounds, resulting in the cancellation of the 1862 county fair. Individuals and organizations across Reading and Berks County contributed supplies and support to the hospital.<\/p>\n
The dedication is hosted and organized by Theresa Adams, PhD, MSN, RN, Professor Emeritus and Planning Coordinator for Alvernia University\u2019s Upsilon Zeta Chapter, Sigma Theta Tau International.
