\t\t\tOBITUARY\t\t<\/p>\n
Michael Schiffman, beloved husband and father, completed his life journey Wednesday, 10 December 2025. He passed peacefully at home following a prolonged struggle with dementia.<\/p>\n
Michael was born in Reading on 18 March 1943, the only child of Millicent (Oritsky) and Phillip Schi?man.<\/p>\n
Following his graduation from Mt. Penn High School, Michael attended<\/p>\n
Dartmouth College and earned his MBA in English literature at Columbia University. He was known to belt out the Dartmouth alma mater at the most minor provocation. While at Colombia Michael met is wife, Janice. They subsequently enjoyed fifty-four eventful years together.<\/p>\n
Upon completing his education Michael returned to Reading to become an executive at Oritsky Inc., his family\u2019s suit manufacturing company. When the business was sold, Michael turned his passion for wine into his livelihood, becoming an enormously successful wine salesperson. His wine seminars were frequently requested and enthusiastically received.<\/p>\n
Michael loved reading and writing poetry and was routinely invited to attend the prestigious Bread Loaf Writer\u2019s Conference at Middlebury College. He was also a talented French horn player, a lover of chamber music and an avid fly-fisherman. Friends and family particularly remember Michael for his ironic wit, his intellect, his erudition and his tardiness.<\/p>\n
Michael was a member of Temple Oheb Shalom where he joined the Civic Action committee and volunteered at the Jewish Food Festival. He especially enjoyed participating in the Apple Cake preparations. Michael also worked with children at Tyson Schoener School who were experiencing reading challenges.<\/p>\n
Michael is survived by his wife, Janice McGill Schi?man, his son, Matthew Schi?man and cousins Jill Skaist, Mimi Oritsky, Sandy Hyman, Sheila Parrish, Alan Rovner and JoAmy Shulman.<\/p>\n
A private, graveside service was held on Monday 15 December to be followed by a celebration of life at a later date. Donations to the Literary Council of Reading Berks in Michael\u2019s memory would be welcomed in lieu of flowers.<\/p>\n
