Flames broke out around 11 a.m. Tuesday along McLean Street.<\/p>\n
DUPONT, Pa. \u2014 “It was just blazing, all the flames were way the heck up. It was getting worse and worse,” said Bob Lasota, neighbor.<\/p>\n
Flames and smoke could be seen for blocks across Dupont as a fire broke out just before noon at a home along McLean Street.<\/p>\n
Those who live across the street were in shock.<\/p>\n
“I’m in the kitchen, and I smell smoke. I’m looking down in the cellar. I’m looking around. Then I see all this,” said Paulette Lasota, neighbor.<\/p>\n
A handful of nearby fire departments were on scene to help put out the flames as they tore through the home.<\/p>\n
Neighbors say it spread fast.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“I ran out the back because the smoke was out the back, and I couldn’t believe it in the alley. It was already burning pretty good,” said Bruce Washney, neighbor.<\/p>\n
According to the Luzerne County Coroner’s Office, one person died.<\/p>\n
Neighbors say they got to know the man who lived there over the years. “He did some work on the house. He’s always worked on the house since he moved in,” said Washney.<\/p>\n
There is no word yet on what sparked the fire, but neighbors say the recent bitter cold temperatures have them reaching for the thermostat. “That’s when it starts- it gets cold, and people blaze the heat. These old houses, you have no idea what’s in the walls,” said Lasota.<\/p>\n
As this deadly fire comes just a week before the Christmas holidays.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“I couldn’t believe it. Especially now, this time of year.
