The final minted pennies had a Greek omega sign embossed on their faces next to Abraham Lincoln.<\/p>\n United States Mint<\/p>\n Each of the coins was embossed with\u00a0the\u00a0omega\u00a0symbol “” marking the\u00a0final run of\u00a0the coin first\u00a0minted in 1793, ostensibly why 232 lots were sold, per Stack’s Bowers Galleries.<\/p>\n Each trio of coins sold for an average lot value of over $72,000, and\u00a0the final set, No. 232,\u00a0sold for $800,000, as it included the very last circulating pennies from Philadelphia and Denver and the final gold\u00a0omega\u00a0penny.<\/p>\n Stack’s Bowers Galleries President Brian Kendrella said the sale was an honor.<\/p>\n “It’s an extraordinary honor to again be selected to partner with the United States Mint to offer exciting numismatic rarities to the collecting public,” he said.<\/p>\n The Mint’s acting director, Kristie McNally,\u00a0said\u00a0in a press release<\/a>\u00a0that she was excited to put the coins up for bid.<\/p>\n “The penny has withstood 232 years of our Nation’s history, and we are proud to offer the chance for the public to celebrate this moment into perpetuity by purchasing one of these special sets.
