SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) \u2014 Lackawanna County and the City of Scranton have extended their Code Blue frigid weather alerts as dangerously cold temperatures and strong winds are expected to grip the region through early next week.<\/p>\n
The alerts will remain in effect during the following periods:<\/p>\n
Friday, Dec. 19, 8 p.m. to Saturday, Dec. 20, 7 a.m. \u2014 Wind chill around 11FSunday, Dec. 21, 8 p.m. to Monday, Dec. 22, 7 a.m. \u2014 Wind chill near 8FMonday, Dec. 22, 8 p.m. to Tuesday, Dec. 23, 7 a.m. \u2014 Wind chill around 16F<\/p>\n
Officials say warming centers and outreach operations will be expanded to protect vulnerable residents, including those experiencing homelessness.<\/p>\n
Strong Winds and Wintry Weather Expected<\/p>\n
FOX56 Chief Meteorologist Brian Schroeder reports that a Wind Advisory is in effect for Bradford, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, Susquehanna, Wayne, and Wyoming Counties from 7 p.m. Thursday through 1 a.m. Saturday.<\/p>\n
A separate advisory covers Carbon and Monroe Counties from 1 a.m. Friday to 1 a.m. Saturday.<\/p>\n
Schroeder\u2019s forecast calls for a stretch of unsettled and increasingly wintry weather:<\/p>\n
Thursday: Partly cloudy with clouds increasing. High near 44F, winds from the south at 10\u201320 mph, gusting to 30 mph.Thursday Night: Cloudy with rain totaling 1\/2 to 1 inch, possibly more. Low around 42F. Winds strengthen from the south at 15\u201325 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.Friday: Rain showers change to snow as temperatures drop into the 30s.Saturday: Mostly cloudy, high near 36F, low 28F.Sunday (Winter begins at 10:03 a.m.): Partly to mostly cloudy with mixed showers possible.
