READING, Pa. – Reading Police say several vehicles were damaged a week ago inside public parking garages, including Reed & Court, Chiarelli, and Front & Washington.<\/p>\n
Police Chief Javier Ruiz says two juveniles have now been charged, and investigators are still working with the Reading Parking Authority on added security and prevention.<\/p>\n
Authorities say about 20 vehicles were damaged, many with broken windows. The Reading Parking Authority tells 69 News it\u2019s working closely with police to increase security across city garages, but for some people who work downtown, the incidents add to existing concerns.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s safer for me to have a ride in and a ride home, because of the dangers that lurk in the city,\u201d said Kay Eisenbeiss of Muhlenberg Township.<\/p>\n
Others say the vandalism is frustrating and they want accountability.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think most people are, just if they find somebody, crack down on them, I guess. Make sure you don\u2019t just let them go,\u201d said Curtis Heffenscher of Germansville.<\/p>\n
But not everyone says they feel unsafe.<\/p>\n
\u201cI feel safe. I\u2019ve had no problems in Reading. You\u2019re going to find that everywhere,\u201d said Frankie Caruso.<\/p>\n
Police say this is not just minor damage. Under Pennsylvania law, vandalism is classified as \u201ccriminal mischief,\u201d a crime that can carry higher penalties depending on the value of the property destroyed.<\/p>\n
