Instead, they\u2019re \u201cgetting moved around,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, an annual event held the week before Thanksgiving, started Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Some shelter beds available<\/p>\n<p>Since August, Tuerk has ordered the closure of three camps along the creek.<\/p>\n<p>Crews in late September started clearing a camp along Jordan Creek just north of Tilghman Street. Residents there said more than 100 people lived at that camp some days.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of people still <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lehighvalleynews.com\/allentown\/residents-stressed-as-crews-bulldoze-allentown-homeless-encampment\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">were living at the camp as city crews arrived to clear it.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>That eviction prompted officials from the city, county and Lehigh Valley Community Foundation to work with the regional United Way to open the Allentown YMCA\u2019s overnight shelter early.<\/p>\n<p>    \u201cOur goal is to be able to tap into resources available to not have to go over capacity. If we do, we will make every attempt to secure an alternate bed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tami Unger, Allentown YMCA branch director<\/p>\n<p>It <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lehighvalleynews.com\/allentown\/allentown-shelter-draws-dozens-nightly-in-first-week-after-early-opening-camp-closure\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">opened Sept. 30<\/a>, about seven weeks ahead of its typical Nov. 15 opening.<\/p>\n<p>City workers cleared a second camp last week. One man, who spoke Nov. 10 to LehighValleyNews.com as <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lehighvalleynews.com\/allentown\/i-dont-know-what-to-do-allentown-starts-latest-homeless-camp-clearing\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">bulldozers beeped in the distance<\/a>, said he had \u201cno clue\u201d where he would go that night.<\/p>\n<p>He said he considered going to the Y but heard the facility already is full most nights.<\/p>\n<p>The 80-bed shelter is averaging about 45 guests a night and has yet to reach its capacity, maxing out at 70 guests one night, according to Tami Unger, branch director for the Allentown YMCA.<\/p>\n<p>    \u201cIt\u2019s not really addressing the problem, it\u2019s just brushing it aside. Why just bulldoze somebody\u2019s tent if they have nowhere else to go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Matt Tuerk in April<\/p>\n<p>The shelter\u2019s beds were used more than 2,200 times by 139 people between Sept. 30 and Nov. 11, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Unger expressed concern in early October about capacity issues \u201cin the coldest months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>YMCA staff is working to connect some who show up at the shelter with other partners who can place them in alternative housing, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal is to be able to tap into resources available to not have to go over capacity,\u201d Unger said. \u201cIf we do, we will make every attempt to secure an alternate bed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Flood risk: Mayor<\/p>\n<p>The mayor this spring touted a change to the city\u2019s approach to homeless camps, saying he ordered city employees to clean up rather than \u201cclear people out with a place to shelter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not really addressing the problem, it\u2019s just brushing it aside,\u201d he told LehighValleyNews.com in April. \u201cWhy just bulldoze somebody\u2019s tent if they have nowhere else to go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the banks of the Jordan Creek, where all three closed camps were established, are at risk of flooding during strong storms, Tuerk has said.<\/p>\n<p>    \u201cI don&#8217;t have anywhere else for people to go right now, but I can&#8217;t let them sleep in a place where they run a higher risk of losing their life.
