{"id":6543,"date":"2025-10-18T01:25:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-18T01:25:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/6543\/"},"modified":"2025-10-18T01:25:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-18T01:25:07","slug":"homemade-haunted-house-in-pennsylvania-helps-kids-in-need","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/6543\/","title":{"rendered":"Homemade haunted house in Pennsylvania helps kids in need"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\tMichael Moore\u2019s love for Halloween gave him a thought when he was 15. \u201cI thought, \u2018Wouldn&#8217;t it be neat to do a haunted walk-through in the garage?\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cFirst thing I thought was no way,\u201d said Moore&#8217;s father, Charles. \u201cIn no way am I letting you tear up my garage.\u201d &#8220;No way&#8221; turned into a tradition that lasted for eight years. \u201cWe went all the way to where we had working walls and doors,\u201d Michael said. \u201cIt blossomed quite a bit.\u201d\u201cI\u2019m still pulling staples out of my garage ceiling and walls,\u201d Charles said. \u201cIt expanded from my garage, down the driveway, across the street onto property we owned, and into a haunted hollow. I got involved in the acting part of it. My wife, Bernadine, was an evil butcher inside the house.\u201dThe homemade attraction was named after one of Michael\u2019s favorite characters.\u201cFrankenstein and Igor, and I thought Igor was pretty cool,\u201d he said. Igor\u2019s gained a big following over that time. \u201cA lot of people, once they jumped in to participate, they wanted to help year after year,\u201d Michael said. \u201cWe developed this fan following through the years that people would want to come back and see the next chapter of the story.\u201d Michael and his family collected thousands in donations. They gave it all to charity. \u201cWe do this for the community, we do this for our family and we do it for the people in need,\u201d Michael said. \u201cWe wanted to give back. We\u2019re blessed and fortunate to have what we have.\u201d\u201cI have a bad heart,\u201d Charles said. \u201cSo, the second year went to the heart association.\u201dBy 2003, life became too busy to keep Igor\u2019s open. \u201cI stopped doing it when I was in college,\u201d Michael said. \u201cI was getting close to graduating and starting my career. I never knew if we were going to do this again or not.\u201d\u201cIt was a big part of me and my wife,\u201d Charles said. \u201cYou would still get people coming up and asking, &#8216;Why don&#8217;t you do it again?\u2019\u201dOne of those people was Michael\u2019s 17-year-old daughter, Anna. \u201cIt&#8217;s always been something that I loved hearing about and was something I wanted to do,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019ve been jokingly begging him for years. Then, we said, &#8216;We\u2019re serious. It\u2019s not a joke anymore. I want to do it.&#8217;\u201dThrough sketches and months of preparation, Anna became Igor in her own way. She helped resurrect not Frankenstein\u2019s monster, but her dad\u2019s fright shack in 2024. \u201cI started doing a lot of the house layout,\u201d Anna said. \u201cWe started this year at the end of June.\u201d\u201cI can\u2019t begin to tell you the amount of pride I have,\u201d Charles said. \u201cShe\u2019s an artist. She\u2019s a set maker. She\u2019s an actress.\u201dThe shack\u2019s revival came back the same way it began. The Moores once again helped those in need with their creation. Last year, the house raised $1,000 to help the victims of hurricanes Helene and Milton. This year, all the money will go to Camp Boggy Creek. It\u2019s a camp in Florida for kids with serious medical conditions. The Moores have family in Florida who work with the camp. \u201cTheir American Legion supports Camp Boggy Creek,\u201d Michael said. \u201cWe thought because of our local connections with scouting, it\u2019s a perfect fit.\u201d \u201cIt&#8217;s very unexpected,\u201d Anna added. \u201cIt&#8217;s not your typical by-the-book kind of service, but it&#8217;s really fun.\u201d The finishing touches are still being made. Anna and her family are looking forward to helping those in need the only way they know how. \u201cI am so excited,\u201d Anna said. \u201cEvery time I think about it, there&#8217;s a smile on my face. I&#8217;m so ready to see people terrified out of their mind.\u201dIgor\u2019s Fright Shack is open for five nights over the next three weekends.Oct. 24-25Nov. 1Nov. 7-8Tickets are free, but donations are encouraged.
