From pickles and bologna, to mushrooms and strawberries, Pennsylvanians drop (or raise) some of the most unusual items in the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Read on for just some of the many year-end celebrations with a unique hometown twist held throughout the state.<\/p>\n<p>Bethlehem<\/p>\n<p>Bethlehem commemorates the beginning of a new year with the dropping of a 4-foot, 9-inches tall, 400-pound yellow Peep. The annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelstacks.org\/festivals\/peepsfest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">PeepsFest<\/a> is a two-day event celebrating the marshmallow candies made in the Lehigh Valley.<\/p>\n<p>PeepsFest will feature family-friendly activities and fireworks. Ring in the new year from 3 to 6 p.m. Dec. 30 and 31 with the dropping of the Peep taking place at 5:35 p.m. each night.<\/p>\n<p>Dillsburg<\/p>\n<p>Although Dillsburg has nothing to do with pickles, the town knows how to have fun with its name. To celebrate the new year, a delicious dill known as Mr. Pickle is dropped into a barrel in the center of town.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/570502912143808\/?acontext=%7B%22event_action_history%22%3A[]%7D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">celebration<\/a> starts at 7 p.m. and concludes with the pickle drop and fireworks.<\/p>\n<p>Gettysburg<\/p>\n<p>Gettysburg started a new tradition a few years back, the raising of Abraham Lincoln\u2019s stovepipe hat at the stroke of midnight in Lincoln Square. The event, <a href=\"https:\/\/gettysburgsquareevents.org\/index.php\/2025\/04\/25\/gettysburg-new-years-eve-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">From Lincoln Square to Times Square<\/a>, features family-friendly activities like face painting and balloon animals, as well as live entertainment\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hallam\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hallam rings in the new year with the dropping of a replica of the Shoe House at midnight. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorkpa.org\/event\/first-night-hallam-hellam\/46703\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">family-oriented event<\/a> starts at 7 p.m. at the Hallam Fire Company and Trinity United Church of Christ and will feature a magician, bingo, and other activities.<\/p>\n<p>Harrisburg<\/p>\n<p>One minute before midnight, a giant, lit strawberry starts its descent to ring in the New Year in Harrisburg. While strawberries are grown nearby, Harrisburg isn\u2019t particularly known for strawberries and there is no major industry in the area related to the fruit. Instead, Harrisburg drops a strawberry in recognition of its Strawberry Square shopping center.<\/p>\n<p>On Dec. 31 starting at 9 p.m., the City of Harrisburg will host <a href=\"https:\/\/harrisburgpa.gov\/events\/new_years_eve.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the <\/a>annual New Year\u2019s Eve celebration with the strawberry drop and fireworks at midnight.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hershey<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Sweetest Place on Earth\u201d puckers up for a decadent new year with the raising of a Hershey\u2019s Kiss and a midnight fireworks display every year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/hersheynewyears\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Beginning at 7:30 p.m. in downtown Hershey<\/a> this New Year\u2019s Eve, there will be food and drink vendors as well as entertainment, with the night culminating in a Kiss countdown with the Hershey\u2019s characters and then a fireworks display.<\/p>\n<p>Kennett Square<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cMushroom Capital of the World\u201d drops a 700-pound stainless steel mushroom at the stroke of <a href=\"http:\/\/midnightinthesquare.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">midnight<\/a> as a nod to the town\u2019s acres of fungus farms. The festivities begin at 7 p.m. on State and Union Streets.<\/p>\n<p>Lancaster<\/p>\n<p>While a white rose drops in York (more on that below), Lancaster drops a red rose at midnight on New Year\u2019s Eve. The free celebration takes place at Penn Medicine Park. There\u2019s a kid\u2019s party from 8 to 10 p.m. with a countdown and balloon drop. The Red Rose drop is followed by a fireworks show. <\/p>\n<p>Lebanon<\/p>\n<p>In Lebanon, a famous Pennsylvania Dutch deli meat descends from the sky as the last seconds of the year are counted down. A 16-foot cylinder of Lebanon bologna comes to a stop at the stroke of midnight and is then donated to local charities.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lebanonpa.org\/calendar\/2025-community-events\/new-year-s-eve-bologna-drop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">bologna will drop again this year<\/a> on Dec. 31 with the celebration starting at 10 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Lewistown<\/p>\n<p>After taking a few years off, the Lewistown Chip Drop returns to downtown New Year\u2019s Eve, when Lewistown rings in the new year by dropping a gigantic bag of Hartley\u2019s potato chips. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/p\/1Nqnxhymts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">The family-friendly event<\/a> starts at 9 p.m. on Monument Square and runs until 12:30 a.m. <\/p>\n<p>Lower Allen Township<\/p>\n<p>At the stroke of midnight on Dec. 31, Lower Allen Township drops its pants. Literally. The 5-foot tall pair of yellow breeches is a playful reference to the Yellow Breeches Creek that flows through the town\u2019s park.<\/p>\n<p>The town will hold a <a href=\"https:\/\/lowerallennewyearsdrop.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">family-friendly celebration<\/a> starting at 9 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Mechanicsburg<\/p>\n<p>To honor the mechanics that originally settled in the area, Mechanicsburg drops an 85-pound galvanized steel wrench on the eve of the new year. The tradition started in 2004.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrenchdrop.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">town celebrates the New Year<\/a> from 9 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. in front of the Washington Fire Company at 53 E. Main St.<\/p>\n<p>Pittsburgh<\/p>\n<p>At midnight, Pittsburgh raises the <a href=\"https:\/\/firstnightpgh.trustarts.org\/fn_home\/future-of-pittsburgh-ball\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">\u201cFuture of Pittsburgh\u201d<\/a> ball, a 1,000-pound orb made of 100% recycled materials, symbolizing\u00a0 Pittsburgh\u2019s status as a green city.\u00a0 This New Year\u2019s Eve, <a href=\"https:\/\/firstnightpgh.trustarts.org\/events\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the festivities begin at 7 p.m. in the Cultural District.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Shippensburg<\/p>\n<p>Shippensburg embraces its nautical town name by dropping an anchor into the new year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitcumberlandvalley.com\/event\/drop-the-anchor-new-years-celebration\/54947\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">This year\u2019s festivities<\/a> start at 8 p.m. on King Street, between Earl and Penn streets.<\/p>\n<p>York<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s all about the rose every New Year\u2019s Eve in York as the city drops a white rose to kick off the new year.
