Pennsylvania residents looking for a fresh start to the new year can lace up their hiking boots and head to one of more than 60 free guided hikes taking place across the commonwealth on New Year\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n
The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources will host First Day Hikes<\/a> at 49 state parks and three forest districts on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026. The events are part of a nationwide initiative designed to encourage healthy lifestyles and year-round recreation in state parks.<\/p>\n Most guided hikes will cover one to two miles, though some locations will offer longer routes depending on terrain. DCNR staff and trained volunteers will lead the walks during daylight hours, with options tailored for families, seniors, and pet owners.<\/p>\n \u201cFirst Day Hikes are a fun and welcoming way for people of all ages and abilities to experience Pennsylvania\u2019s state parks and forests,\u201d said DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn. \u201cThey\u2019re a great opportunity to connect with nature, meet fellow outdoor enthusiasts, and start the year off on a healthy note.\u201d<\/p>\n Participating locations span every region of the state, including Ohiopyle State Park, Presque Isle State Park, Cook Forest State Park, Point State Park, Beltzville State Park<\/a>, Delaware Canal State Park<\/a> and Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center<\/a>. Registration information can be found on the park websites.<\/p>\n Pennsylvania\u2019s 124 state parks and 2.2 million acres of state forest land remain free and open to the public year-round.<\/p>\n The First Day Hikes program is coordinated by the National Association of State Park Directors and includes participation from all 50 states. Pennsylvania has been part of the initiative since it began. Hikers can share their experiences on social media using #FirstDayHikes.<\/p>\n Gov. Josh Shapiro\u2019s 2025-26 budget includes a $13 million increase for DCNR. The funding will support the addition of Pennsylvania\u2019s 125th state park<\/a> in 2026, provide $5 million for the state\u2019s 12 heritage areas, and allocate $4.5 million to combat invasive pests and plants.<\/p>\n Beyond the New Year\u2019s Day events, Pennsylvania state parks offer self-guided hikes, story walks, and adventure labs throughout the year.
