SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) \u2014 Officials in Lackawanna County and the City of Scranton have issued Code Blue Frigid Weather Alerts for parts of Christmas week as dangerously cold conditions move into the area.<\/p>\n
The Lackawanna County Emergency Management Agency announced that the first Code Blue will be in effect from 8 p.m. Monday, December 22, through 7 a.m. Tuesday, December 23, with wind chills expected to drop to around 16 degrees. A second alert is scheduled from 8 p.m. Friday, December 26, until 7 a.m. Saturday, December 27, when wind chills are forecast to reach approximately 20 degrees, accompanied by a possible wintry mix.<\/p>\n
A Code Blue is declared when temperatures or wind chills are expected to fall below 20 degrees. The alert activates emergency plans designed to protect vulnerable populations, particularly individuals experiencing homelessness.<\/p>\n
During Code Blue periods, emergency shelter options will be available throughout Scranton. St. Anthony\u2019s Haven, located at 409 Olive Street, will be open overnight from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m. The Weston Field House at 982 Providence Road will open its doors at 7:30 p.m. The Community Intervention Center at 445 North Sixth Avenue will operate from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with extended hours available if conditions warrant.<\/p>\n
