The autonomous robot, backed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/markets\/biggest-delivery-business-u-s-no-longer-ups-fedex\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">biggest delivery company<\/a> in the US, may be taking advantage of Pennsylvania\u2019s favorable regulatory environment, like other robotics startups in the region, but local residents increasingly find the tech unsettling.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPittsburgh [is] offering the perfect playground for our physical AI,\u201d the company wrote in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DR_9r7sAEX-\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Instagram post<\/a>, showing off the delivery robot\u2019s ability to navigate the city\u2019s iconic public stairways.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Autonomous delivery robots aren\u2019t new to Pittsburgh. In the past, delivery robots could be <a href=\"https:\/\/flypittsburgh.com\/acaa-corporate\/our-impact\/xbridge\/autonomous-food-delivery-robots\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">found at the airport<\/a> or roaming the streets of the city\u2019s East End, but their public presence has waned somewhat over the years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The recent RIVR buzz, however, contributes to the trend that Pittsburgh has become a testing ground specifically for physical AI.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a familiar argument from organizations like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aistriketeam.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI Strike Team<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/robopgh.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pittsburgh Robotics Network<\/a>: The city has become a real-world testing ground for emerging AI and robotics technologies, attracting companies from around the globe.<\/p>\n<p>Pittsburgh-based unicorn Skild AI has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/media-telecom\/softbank-nvidia-looking-invest-skild-ai-14-billion-valuation-sources-say-2025-12-08\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">courting multibillion-dollar investments<\/a> for its \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=skild+ai+technical.ly&amp;sca_esv=9a8c9b675d500d57&amp;rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS1146US1146&amp;ei=wYlJaaD8Br6y5NoPici88A0&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjg4NvR5dGRAxU-GVkFHQkkD94Q4dUDCBE&amp;uact=5&amp;oq=skild+ai+technical.ly&amp;gs_lp=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&amp;sclient=gws-wiz-serp#:~:text=See%20inside%3A%20Skild,ai%2Dhuman%2Drobot\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI brain<\/a>,\u201d designed to power robots that can understand and operate in the physical world, from warehouses to homes. Plus, autonomous vehicle company Waymo <a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/civics\/waymo-philly-pittsburgh-baltimore-expansion\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">launched testing in Pittsburgh<\/a> earlier this month.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, the public\u2019s response has been less glowing. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DSQZ6VFicaN\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">post of the RIVR robot<\/a> posted on Instagram by humor account the Pitts Company had more than 450 comments, with many having a negative or wary reaction to the tech.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI assure you if I see this on the street, I will beat it with a hammer until it dies,\u201d one commenter wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Other comments, though, said that if the robot can navigate Pittsburgh streets and sidewalks, it can navigate anything.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>RIVR did not respond to Technical.ly\u2019s request to comment on why the company chose Pittsburgh for testing, how long it plans to test here and whether it will expand operations in the city next year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>RIVR partners for Pittsburgh connections<\/p>\n<p>RIVR is working on a robot that can tackle the final step in delivering goods to a customer\u2019s door, which can be the most <a href=\"https:\/\/www3.weforum.org\/docs\/WEF_Future_of_the_last_mile_ecosystem.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">costly and complex<\/a> part of the shipping process.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In May, the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rivr.ai\/stories\/announcing-our-u-s-launch-rivr-partners-with-veho-to-redefine-the-last-100-yards-of-e-commerce-delivery\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced a partnership<\/a> with delivery platform <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shipveho.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Veho<\/a>, which has a Pittsburgh presence, to start testing its robots in Austin, Texas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will be working with RIVR in Pittsburgh beginning in the new year,\u201d Evan Wagner, Veho\u2019s communications director, told Technical.ly. \u201cThey currently have five robots deployed in Austin, so I believe Pittsburgh will be their second market.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Beyond that specific deal, though, RIVR may be taking advantage of Pittsburgh\u2019s prominence in this space with its latest tests.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pghcitypaper.com\/news-2\/pennsylvania-legalizes-autonomous-delivery-robots-classifies-them-as-pedestrians-18482040\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pennsylvania legalized autonomous delivery robots<\/a>, classifying them as pedestrians and making Pennsylvania arguably one of the least restrictive states in the nation for this tech.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pittsburgh\u2019s an even better spot now for physical AI, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aipowerpittsburgh.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">local advocates say<\/a>, because of the city\u2019s proximity to top research institutions, natural gas reserves and vacant industrial sites ready to be transformed into data centers or AI hubs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>RIVR has another key advantage, too, with significant financial backing from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rivr.ai\/stories\/swiss-mile-secures-22m-in-seed-funding-co-led-by-jeff-bezos-and-hongshan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">raised $22 million<\/a> in 2024 for its wheeled quadruped robot. The round was co-led by Bezos through Bezos Expeditions. The Amazon Industrial Innovation Fund, a $1 billion corporate venture capital fund that has invested in Pittsburgh companies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agilityrobotics.com\/content\/agility-robotics-raises-150m-series-b-led-by-dcvc-and-playground-global\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Agility Robotics<\/a>, also contributed to the raise.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A rocky history of pilot testing\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Multiple outside tech companies have tried to test their autonomous delivery robots in Pittsburgh, but ultimately, they\u2019ve failed to set up shop here.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In late 2019, California-based company Starship Technologies started testing its food delivery robots on the University of Pittsburgh\u2019s campus. Soon after, the company temporarily paused testing because a student who used a wheelchair said the robot <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wesa.fm\/identity-justice\/2019-10-22\/food-delivery-robots-pulled-from-pitt-campus-after-backlash-about-mobility\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">impeded her ability<\/a> to access the sidewalk, posing a safety risk.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Even as the robots returned in 2020 for some additional testing, they <a href=\"https:\/\/pittnews.com\/article\/160259\/news\/starship-robots-may-return-in-future-under-new-dining-contractor\/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CThe%20robots%20couldn%E2%80%99t%20make%20it%20up%20the%20hill%20to%20the%20Pete%2C%E2%80%9D%20Ferrante%20said.%20%E2%80%9CIf%20the%20weather%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20perfect%2C%20they%20would%20have%20issues.%20If%20students%20passed%2C%20the%20robots%20would%20just%20stop%20in%20the%20middle%20of%20the%20sidewalk.%E2%80%9D\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">continued to struggle<\/a> to navigate Pittsburgh\u2019s hills, according to Pitt students.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>California-based <a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/startups\/kiwibot-robots-pilot\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kiwibot later tested in Pittsburgh<\/a> in 2021 and 2022, also finding the terrain and public response difficult to navigate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While Kiwibot mapped neighborhoods like Bloomfield and Lawrenceville to implement its delivery tech, the results were a mixed bag of <a href=\"https:\/\/knightfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Knight-AV-Initiative-PDD-Report-Final_Aug-2022-1.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">helpful and hesitant neighbors<\/a>. That was a concern among some commenters, while others were worried this tech could take away jobs from humans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis sucks,\u201d one commenter wrote. \u201cTaking jobs from people and making rich people richer.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But, humans remain an important part of the delivery process, according to Wagner at Veho.
