HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) \u2014 With the forecasted winter weather expected to hit the area Friday evening, PennDOT is planning to implement restrictions on Pennsylvania highways.<\/p>\n
PennDOT said it expects to put restrictions in place at 10 a.m. for the following roads:<\/p>\n
Interstate 81, south of I-83<\/p>\n
All Pennsylvania interstates west of I-81, including PA Turnpike I-76, PA Turnpike I-70 and all western PA Turnpike extensions<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, there are other restrictions expected to be put in place at 2 p.m. for the below listed roads:<\/p>\n
U.S. 22 between I-78 to Route 33<\/p>\n
All Pennsylvania interstates east of I-81, including PA Turnpike I-76 and all eastern PA Turnpike extensions<\/p>\n
These will be tier 3 restrictions, meaning no commercial vehicles are permitted except loaded single trailers with chains or approved alternate traction devices. Also, all school buses, commercial buses, motor coaches, motorcycles, RV\/motorhomes and passenger vehicles towing trailers are not permitted on impacted roadways.<\/p>\n
Close<\/a><\/p>\n Thanks for signing up!<\/p>\n Watch for us in your inbox.<\/p>\n Subscribe Now<\/p>\n PennDOT said it will have crews actively pre-treating roadways where needed ahead of the storm and offered the following tips for drivers who encounter a snow squall or blowing and drifting snow:<\/p>\n Slow down gradually and drive at a speed that suits conditions.<\/p>\n Turn on your headlights. If caught in a snow squall, turn on your hazard lights.<\/p>\n Stay in your lane and increase your following distance.<\/p>\n Stay alert, keep looking as far ahead as possible and be patient.<\/p>\n Do not drive distracted; your full attention is required.<\/p>\n Use your defroster and wipers.<\/p>\n Keep windows and mirrors free of snow and ice.<\/p>\n During whiteouts, come to a complete stop only when you can safely pull off the roadway.<\/p>\n Do not stop in the flow of traffic since this could cause a chain-reaction collision.<\/p>\n Do not pass a vehicle moving slowly or speed up to get away from a vehicle that is following too closely.<\/p>\n Always buckle up and never drive impaired.<\/p>\n Have an emergency kit handy.\u00a0Here<\/a>\u00a0are some suggestions of what you could include in your emergency kit.<\/p>\n Preliminary data shows that last winter there were 8,329 crashes, 29 fatalities and 2,959 injuries on snowy, slushy or ice-covered roadways, according to PennDOT.
