Northampton County<\/a> seniors struggling to heat their homes this winter can apply for emergency fuel assistance through a program offering up to $800 in one-time aid.<\/p>\n

The Northampton County Area Agency on Aging will distribute funds through its Emergency Fuel Assistance Program, which provides $780 toward heating costs and allocates $20 to Project of Easton for administrative expenses. <\/p>\n

The program, which opened on Dec. 4, receives funding from a federal HUD grant administered by the Department of Community and Economic Development.<\/p>\n

\u201cKeeping our seniors warm and safe throughout the winter months is a fundamental responsibility,\u201d said Northampton County Executive Lamont G. McClure. \u201cNo older adult in Northampton County should have to choose between heating their home and meeting other essential needs. This program helps ensure that our most vulnerable residents can weather the winter with dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Residents must be at least 60 years old and live anywhere in Northampton County except Bethlehem City to qualify. Applicants need to meet HUD income guidelines and provide documentation of household income. Their fuel tank must be at one-quarter full or less, and those seeking assistance with non-oil heat sources must present a shut-off notice.<\/p>\n

Proof of residency requires a current lease copy or landlord letter along with two pieces of mail, including one bill. Applicants must have exhausted LIHEAP benefits or received a denial from that program before qualifying for this assistance.<\/p>\n

Seniors can apply by calling Northampton County Information & Referral Emergency Services at 610-559-3270 or 610-829-4800.
