A section of Route 22 in Northampton County will close overnight this weekend as crews remove an aging bridge as part of a major replacement project.<\/p>\n

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced the highway will close in both directions between Routes 33 and 191 from 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, until 6 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 7. The closure will facilitate the safe removal of the existing Farmersville Road bridge in Bethlehem Township.<\/p>\n

During the nine-hour closure, traffic will be detoured using Route 191, Newburg Road, Country Club Road, Hecktown Road and Route 33. PennDOT advises motorists to expect delays and use caution while following the detour route.<\/p>\n

The bridge removal is part of a $4.67 million replacement project that began in October 2024. H&K Group Inc. of Skippack, Pennsylvania, serves as the general contractor, with completion expected in October 2026.<\/p>\n

The existing Farmersville Road bridge, constructed in 1954, is a single-span concrete structure measuring 95 feet long and 35.5 feet wide, with a 14-foot height clearance. Its replacement will be a two-span pre-stressed concrete bridge spanning 180 feet with a width of 33.4 feet and increased clearance of 16.5 feet.<\/p>\n

The bridge serves approximately 548 vehicles daily. Motorists can monitor traffic conditions through PennDOT\u2019s 511PA service, available online at 511PA.com<\/a>, through a smartphone app<\/a> or by calling 5-1-1.<\/p>\n
