{"id":71915,"date":"2025-12-28T11:40:10","date_gmt":"2025-12-28T11:40:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/71915\/"},"modified":"2025-12-28T11:40:10","modified_gmt":"2025-12-28T11:40:10","slug":"snap-changes-how-to-appeal-if-you-lose-your-benefits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/71915\/","title":{"rendered":"SNAP changes: How to appeal if you lose your benefits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From Philly and the Pa. suburbs to South Jersey and Delaware, what would you like WHYY News to cover? <a href=\"#Section1\">Let us know!<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of Pennsylvania residents who rely on food stamps have been scrambling to find work or prove they are unable to work amid changes to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pa.gov\/agencies\/dhs\/resources\/snap\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program<\/a>, or SNAP.\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pa.gov\/agencies\/dhs\/resources\/snap\/snap-work-requirements-abawds#accordion-d710e05f4f-item-12d2821376\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New work requirements<\/a> under the Trump administration\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/pennsylvania-legislators-react-trump-house-gop-spending-bill\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">One Big Beautiful Bill<\/a>\u201d mean recipients must prove they volunteer, participate in an education or workforce development program, or work at least 20 hours a week. The federal budget bill was passed by Republicans in Congress and signed by President Donald Trump in July.\n<\/p>\n<p>Close to 144,000 Pennsylvania residents, and as many as 45,000 Philadelphians, could lose their food stamps, according to state and city officials.\n  <\/p>\n<p>SNAP recipients can seek medical and caregiver exemptions. However, advocates are concerned people\u2019s\u2019 benefits may be wrongly terminated because their eligibility hasn\u2019t been documented.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s definitely still a concern that some people are not aware of these changes, that maybe they aren\u2019t going to get their documentation in time, even if they qualify for an exemption or they\u2019re compliant,\u201d said Mackenzie Libbey, a staff attorney at Community Legal Services.\n<\/p>\n<p>WHYY News asked CLS what people need to know about the changes, and how to file an appeal.\n<\/p>\n<p>What are the work requirements?<\/p>\n<p>SNAP recipients who work and earn more than $217.50 per week before taxes can still receive their benefits. Everyone else must submit documentation proving they volunteer or work 20 hours a week or lose their benefits after three months.\n<\/p>\n<p>Philadelphia residents previously were exempt from work requirements due to the city\u2019s rates of unemployment.
