PITTSBURGH \u2014 A federal judge in Pittsburgh has stopped the federal government from forcing UPMC to hand over records regarding gender-affirming care.<\/p>\n
In July, the Department of Justice subpoenaed more than 20 doctors and providers<\/a>, including UPMC, who it says were involved in performing \u201ctransgender medical procedures on children.\u201d<\/p>\n But on Tuesday, Chief United States District Judge Cathy Bissoon granted a motion to quash the DOJ\u2019s subpoena.<\/p>\n RELATED COVERAGE >>> Protesters gather at UPMC headquarters to demand gender-affirming care be reinstated to all patients<\/a><\/p>\n In her order, Bissoon cited a similar case filed in Philadelphia, where a federal judge also struck down the government\u2019s arguments. <\/p>\n \u201c(The judge\u2019s) ruling is not an outlier,” Bissoon writes. \u201cTo the undersigned\u2019s knowledge, no reported federal decision has ruled in the government\u2019s favor.\u201d<\/p>\n Bissoon did allow further briefing on potential anonymized records, which the government had said it would accept in a court filing on Dec. 16.<\/p>\n The deadline for the parties to file a brief is Jan. 16.<\/p>\n The motion to quash was filed by patients and former patients who received gender-affirming care from UPMC while minors, as well as their parents, Bissoon writes.<\/p>\n Download the FREE WPXI News app<\/a> for breaking news alerts.<\/p>\n Follow Channel 11 News on Facebook<\/a> and Twitter<\/a>. | Watch WPXI NOW<\/a><\/p>\n TOP STORIES FROM CHANNEL 11 NEWS <\/p>\n \u00a92025 Cox Media Group<\/p>\n
