Improving early grade reading and building a strong community are at the center of United Way\u2019s work. The organization is pleased to support this focus area through summer learning grant opportunities.<\/p>\n
Summer Learning Grants are open to schools and organizations serving Pre-K through 3rd-grade Berks County students. \u201cEarly literacy is one of the strongest predictors of academic success, economic stability, and community well-being. It is important for children to be exposed to and connected with literacy and learning activities year-long, including the summer months. United Way grant opportunities help students retain academic skills and lessen the summer learning loss,\u201d said Tammy White, president of United Way of Berks County.<\/p>\n
These grants provide up to $5,000 in support for summer learning programming. Proposed programming must include a literacy component but may include cross-disciplinary activities, i.e., STEAM. Any school or nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization is eligible to apply. The funds are to help cover expenses related to summer programming from June through August 2026. All programs must include an evaluation element to measure the outcome or success of the literacy component.<\/p>\n
Applications for Summer Learning Grants will be accepted beginning Monday, Jan. 12, through Sunday, Feb. 15. Notice of funding will be made by March 27, with grants awarded in April.<\/p>\n

Proposals will be awarded through a competitive process. A committee of community volunteers, including representatives of the United Way committee and board members, will review and evaluate applications, including programming plans.<\/p>\n
