The district attorney <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/phillyda.org\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">oversees<\/a> an office of more than 600 lawyers, detectives, and support staff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary \">Krasner is running for his third term as district attorney. In his eight years in office, he <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/election\/larry-krasner-district-attorney-philadelphia-crime-campaign-20250401.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">served during<\/a> the single greatest spike in violence in Philadelphia\u2019s history, and also during its <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/news\/philadelphia\/homicides-crime-rate-philadelphia-2024-decrease-20250102.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">steepest decline<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary \">He is one of the <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/election\/larry-krasner-district-attorney-philadelphia-crime-campaign-20250401.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">few remaining<\/a> progressive prosecutors in the United States, and some of his practices have drawn scrutiny, particularly around his <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/news\/retail-theft-philadelphia-arrests-police-krasner-20240719.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">handling of retail theft<\/a> and <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/news\/distrct-attorney-larry-krasner-gun-possession-cases-vufa-police-20201230.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">illegal gun possession cases<\/a>. Prior to being elected in 2017, Krasner was a criminal defense and civil rights attorney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary \">Krasner created the office\u2019s first <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/election\/larry-krasner-district-attorney-philadelphia-crime-campaign-20250401.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">restorative<\/a> justice program, allowing individuals charged with non-gun-related crimes to resolve their cases outside the court system. He also created a police misconduct database.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary \">He has made opposing President <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/donald-trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a> central to his political identity and has positioned himself as the city\u2019s <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/philadelphia\/district-attorney-larry-krasner-clashes-with-conservative-social-media-personality-20250928.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chief antagonist of the White House<\/a>, frequently accusing Trump <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/news\/district-attorney-larry-krasner-donald-trump-president-national-guard-20250916.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">of executive overreach.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary \">Dugan ran as a centrist Democrat during the spring primary election <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/philadelphia\/larry-krasner-philadelphia-district-attorney-democratic-nomination-2025-primary-20250520.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">and lost handily to Krasner<\/a>. He is now the Republican nominee following <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/pat-dugan-larry-krasner-philly-da-election-20250809.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a successful write-in campaign by the city\u2019s GOP<\/a>. Dugan\u2019s campaign said in the spring he would not accept the Republican nomination, but <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/election\/philly-da-race-krasner-dugan-general-election-20251002.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he has since said he changed his mind<\/a> after \u201ca lot of conversations and a lot of urging from regular people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary \">He was endorsed by a bevy of labor unions during the Democratic primary. However, the politically potent Philadelphia Building and Construction Trades Council <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/philadelphia\/building-trades-unions-ryan-boyer-pat-dugan-20250822.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">is no longer backing him<\/a> now that he is running as a Republican.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary \">Dugan served as a Philadelphia Municipal Court judge for 17 years. He is an Army veteran and a former lawyer for <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/philadelphia-city-council\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Philadelphia City Council<\/a> who <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/election\/patrick-dugan-district-attorney-race-military-service-20250327.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has never been a prosecutor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary \">He spent much of his judicial career overseeing diversion courts that keep low-level offenders out of jail. He founded the city\u2019s Veterans Court, which set a national standard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary \">Dugan has sought to build his brand as the \u201ctough-on-crime\u201d candidate, and, if elected, is <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/election\/patrick-dugan-district-attorney-race-military-service-20250327.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">likely to be a more traditional prosecutor<\/a> than Krasner. His <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" href=\"https:\/\/judgeduganforda.com\/plan\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">campaign website<\/a> says violent offenders will face maximum penalties while low-level and first-time offenders will \u201chave a second chance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary inq-p--longform-v2 text-222222\">The Philadelphia city controller operates independently of the mayor and City Council and acts as a fiscal watchdog, conducting audits and investigations into the city\u2019s and the Philadelphia School District\u2019s programs and financial affairs to ensure proper and effective use of city resources. The office is <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/controller.phila.gov\/about\/role-of-the-city-controller\/#:~:text=The%20City%20Controller%20is%20a,not%20subject%20to%20term%20limits.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/controller.phila.gov\/about\/role-of-the-city-controller\/#:~:text=The%20City%20Controller%20is%20a,not%20subject%20to%20term%20limits.\">not subject to term limits<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary \">Brady is running for reelection as city controller. She was first elected in November 2023 after being appointed acting city controller by then-Mayor <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/jim-kenney\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jim Kenney<\/a> in November 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary \">According to her campaign website, Brady wants to prioritize addressing the \u201cunderground economy\u201d in the construction and development sector, gun violence, and the drug and opioid crises. She also wants to audit the Philadelphia Office of Property Assessment and the contracting process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary \">A recent example of Brady\u2019s work as city controller: An audit found that inspectors in the Philadelphia Department of Licenses and Inspections <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/real-estate\/city-controller-licenses-inspections-audit-20250822.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/real-estate\/city-controller-licenses-inspections-audit-20250822.html\">were not performing necessary safety practices<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary \">Patrinos is running to unseat Brady as city controller. He grew up in Northwest Philadelphia and graduated from Central High School before earning a bachelor\u2019s degree in social science from Harvard and a master\u2019s degree in political science from the University of Chicago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary \">He has completed financial and actuarial exams and began his career working in the financial sector as a stockbroker. Then he returned to Philadelphia to teach math and history at local charter and district schools. He has also written for the Federalist, a conservative online magazine, and the <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/chestnut-hill\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chestnut Hill<\/a> Local.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary \">He is running \u201cto ensure that taxpayer dollars are spent responsibly and that every child in Philadelphia has the chance to succeed,\u201d <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" href=\"https:\/\/www.phillygop.com\/candidates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.phillygop.com\/candidates\">according to the Philadelphia GOP website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>  Pa. Supreme Court Judicial Retention\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary inq-p--longform-v2 text-222222\">Three justices on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, the state\u2019s highest court, are asking to be retained for another 10-year term. The seven-member state Supreme Court decides cases that can control the direction of the state, from whose ballot should be counted to whether Pennsylvania\u2019s constitution guarantees the right to an abortion. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary inq-p--longform-v2 text-222222\">The three justices up for retention were all elected as Democrats in 2015, but will appear without a political affiliation on the ballot. Retention votes can be compared to a progress report, where voters are asked whether they believe a justice should be retained for another term. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary inq-p--longform-v2 text-222222\">Voters who wish to retain a judge will mark \u201cyes\u201d below their name. Voters who do not want a justice to serve another term will mark \u201cno.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary \">Donohue, 72, of Pittsburgh, <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pabar.org\/site\/For-Lawyers\/Committees-Commissions\/Judicial-Evaluation\/Resources\/JEC-Ratings\/2025\/Supreme-Court\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">is recommended for retention<\/a> by the <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pabar.org\/pdf\/2025\/Edited%20for%20Posting%20Justice%20Christne%20Donohue.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pennsylvania Bar Association<\/a>.
