The third annual \u201cBethlehem Twelfth Night Celebration\u201d is at 6:15 p.m. Jan. 3, Charles A. Brown Ice House.<\/p>\n
Celtic musical troupe The Chivalrous Crickets & Friends hosts the annual event that bids farewell to Christmastide and welcomes the new year.<\/p>\n
Experience the folk magic, mayhem and mystery of an old world Twelfth Night Yuletide celebration, this year with a nod to the Scottish Christmastime holiday of Hogmanay.<\/p>\n
Caroling, ceilidh dancing, tunes and songs, storytelling, sweets and cider, masking, trivia game hosted by Steven Bost, children\u2019s games, Lord of Misrule lottery and folk customs of yore await at the event, which is part-show, part-festival and part-large community party.<\/p>\n
Join a piping processional; have your New Year fortune read at the \u201cDivination Station,\u201d learn about the ancient custom of Saining, experience a centuries-old mummer\u2019s play replete with sword fights, and beware of Trows, Scotland\u2019s otherworldly Yuletide troublemakers.<\/p>\n

For centuries after the Reformation, the Scottish Parliament banned the observance of Christmas. From the lowlands to the islands, the Scots transferred their ancient Yuletide practices to the New Year. No one knows where the word Hogmanay came from, but today its traditions are still honored in gatherings.<\/p>\n
The \u201cHearthSong Folk Arts: Celebrating Ancient Folk Ways\u201d event at the Ice House blends modern Hogmanay with ancient Scottish Yule, as well as standard-fare Celtic antics and songs for a gathering of holiday merrymaking, mischief and spiritual connection. Wear your favorite fancy or fanciful Christmas garb.<\/p>\n
