Taylor is convicted and sentenced to death in November 2001. He died in prison in April 2024.<\/p>\n<p>April 28 \u201cCold killer\u2019s 20-mile trail leaves five dead\u201d Richard Baumhammers commits a series of racially motivated killings and attacks, killing five and wounding two, as well as shooting two synagogues. He was convicted and sentenced to death in May 2001. He remains on death row.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n2001&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Feb. 11\u201cWhat a blast! A dynamite drum roll and Three Rivers Stadium bows out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Three Rivers Stadium, the former home of the Steelers and Pirates, is demolished in a controlled implosion.<\/p>\n<p>March 31 \u201cA four-star ballpark: Glitches minor as PNC Park draws rave reviews in debut\u201d PNC Park opens with the Pirates hosting the New York Mets for exhibition games.<\/p>\n<p>Aug 31 \u201cFred Rogers rides into the sunset\u201d The last episode of the locally produced and nationally distributed children\u2019s program \u201cMister Rogers\u2019 Neighborhood\u201d airs.<\/p>\n<p>Sept. 11\u201cUnited jetliner crashes in Somerset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The hijacking of United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed in Stonycreek Township, Somerset County, is part of terrorist attacks that profoundly impact Pittsburgh and the nation, leading to a nearly empty Downtown, church vigils, and emotional community responses.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n2002&#13;<\/p>\n<p>July 12 \u201cHomestead span honors baseball team\u201d The Homestead High-Level Bridge is renamed the Homestead Grays Bridge to recognize the former Pittsburgh-area Negro League baseball team.<\/p>\n<p>July 28 \u201c\u2018Help! Help! Please get us out\u2019\u201d After 78 hours in the dark, fearing they would drown, the miners saw the drill break through. All nine Quecreek coal miners are rescued alive in Somerset County.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n2003&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Sept. 21 \u201cConvention center wows small crowd\u201d The new David L. Lawrence Convention Center opens in Downtown Pittsburgh.
