A penny won\u2019t pay for most things in Phillipsburg but it may certainly prove useless against paying one\u2019s own taxes at town hall soon. <\/p>\n

Phillipsburg officials are considering an ordinance that would prohibit town departments from accepting cash payments beginning this year. <\/p>\n

Town council is scheduled to hold a second reading and final vote on the proposal for a cashless system on Jan. 13 at the EnVision Center.<\/p>\n

The town\u2019s \u201cNo Cash\u201d<\/a> policy, Ordinance 2026-1, would require residents to pay for all municipal services, including property taxes and sewer fees, using checks or electronic payment methods. Under the proposed regulations, the town would also implement a $20 fee for any returned checks.<\/p>\n

The move aims to transition the municipality toward a digital-first payment system that is cashless. If approved, cash would no longer be an acceptable form of payment at municipal offices for any town fees or charges.<\/p>\n

Under the proposed policy, residents will need to pay by check or electronic payment methods. The ordinance specifically excludes any discretion to accept cash for tax and sewer fees. <\/p>\n
