PITTSBURGH \u2014 Pittsburgh Mayor Corey O\u2019Connor started the first full day of his administration by walking with parents and kids to school, listening to their safety concerns along their route.<\/p>\n
\u2018It\u2019s kind of amazing. The kids were really excited this was the first thing he was doing in office, walking to school,\u2019 said parent Molly along Beechwood Boulevard.<\/p>\n
\u201cThings like this are important,\u201d said O\u2019Connor. \u201cIt\u2019s the small details that when you\u2019re a parent, you want to make sure that your kid is safe when they get to school.\u201d<\/p>\n
Parents shared concerns, specifically with Beechwood Boulevard.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe kids walk to school every day, they are 8 and 10 and the thing that we worry about the most is the intersection of Beechwood and Douglas, there is no crossing guard there,\u201d said one parent.<\/p>\n
O\u2019Connor says those concerns can be heard across the city.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis happens everywhere, and there are some (places) where when you\u2019re crossing, there aren\u2019t even sidewalks. So it\u2019s different in every neighborhood, but it\u2019s good to hear what the barriers are, especially young kids when they\u2019re walking to school. How do we make it better for them?\u201d said O\u2019Connor.<\/p>\n
O\u2019Connor says there may be safety improvements down the road.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think when it comes to infrastructure and better signage and narrowing lanes if need be to make sure it\u2019s safe for kids to get to school, then we have to do it,\u201d said O\u2019Connor.<\/p>\n
