LIMERICK TWP., Pa. – Major upgrades are coming to Montgomery County’s sole nuclear power plant.<\/p>\n
Constellation Energy, the plant’s owner, today announced that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has approved a License Amendment Request for the Limerick Clean Energy Center\u2019s Digital Modernization Project, a first\u2011of\u2011its\u2011kind upgrade across major control and protection systems that officials say will enhance reliability, diagnostic capability and cyber resilience at the facility.<\/p>\n
The project replaces select analog instrumentation and control equipment with state\u2011of\u2011the\u2011art digital platforms designed to improve equipment monitoring and provide a broader range of automation to support flexibility with enhanced reliability. The upgrades will help Limerick deliver around\u2011the\u2011clock, carbon\u2011free electricity to power homes, businesses and new data\u2011driven industries, and is the first large-scale demonstration of a digital safety system upgrade at an operating U.S. nuclear plant.<\/p>\n

The installation will be done in phases and is planned to occur during upcoming refueling outages.<\/p>\n
