Young athletes sidelined after civic center damaged <\/a><\/p>\n\u201cI think we\u2019re really seeing, you know, something that\u2019s an affront to human rights and civil liberties. I think we can have humane comprehensive immigration reform that doesn\u2019t involve sending, you know, hundreds and even a thousand officers into communities,\u201d Julie Schumacher Cohen from Scranton explained.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of gray area. It\u2019s not a black or white situation, and I think immigration reform has been spoken about and nothing has been done, and it\u2019s time to reform the immigration process,\u201d Scranton resident Barb O\u2019Malley told 28\/22 News.<\/p>\n
This crowd says it is not right to use race as a reason to round up individuals.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is despicable what we are allowing to happen to our friends and neighbors. And it is despicable that we are saying that immigrants are criminals, just if they\u2019re an immigrant, if they\u2019re a different color, if they have an accent,\u201d Holmes continued.<\/p>\n
Holmes has a parting message in this time of tension.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is not the type of thing that we support in this country and certainly not the type of thing we support in northeastern Pennsylvania in a region that was built on the backs of immigrants,\u201d said Holmes.<\/p>\n
Organizers say their goal is to show support for broader discussions about immigration policy and to amplify their concerns in the area.<\/p>\n
