Economist editor-in-chief takes on \u201ccompletely impossible task\u201d of global economic outlook<\/p>\n

While the mayor focused on the city\u2019s busy calendar, a leader for one of the world\u2019s largest news outlets was asked to look into the future of global economics, which she deemed \u201ca completely impossible task.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Zanny Minton Beddoes<\/a>, editor-in-chief at The Economist<\/a>, said the reason the future may seem murky is due to recent actions taken by the U.S. government, specifically the capture of Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro<\/a> and President Donald Trump\u2019s growing interest in acquiring Greenland<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cJust as I woke up this morning, I heard that the president of the Federal Reserve is under criminal investigation,\u201d Beddoes said. \u201cFrankly, it feels like watching a crazy movie right now. It is now a clich\u00e9 to say that the old world is dead. The old world is dead and the completely new world is being created at dizzying speed.\u201d
\n\"ZannyZanny Minton Beddoes, the editor-in-chief for The Economist, told attendees at the 2026 Convening Leaders conference that \u201cthe old world is dead\u201d while discussing the United States\u2019 geopolitical moves, such as tariffs, and the emergence of AI, which she deemed \u201cthe biggest technology revolution since the Industrial Revolution.\u201d (Cory Sharber\/WHYY)\n<\/p>\n

She said the world is experiencing three simultaneous shocks, \u201ceach of which will deserve at least a chapter in our grandchildren\u2019s history books.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

First, she discussed the geopolitical shock, saying, \u201cWe are in real time rewriting the rules of foreign policy and global power.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Then, she said, comes the economic shock.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re completely rewriting the rules of economic policy,\u201d Beddoes said. \u201cWe\u2019ve gone from a world of free trade to a world of tariffs. We\u2019re in a world where governments own shares in companies \u2026 We\u2019re going to a world where the most important thing for any CEO is to know the president of the United States.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Lastly, she discussed the rise of artificial intelligence technology<\/a>, what she deemed \u201cthe biggest technology revolution since the Industrial Revolution.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is going to change the way we work, the way we live, the kind of people we are,\u201d Beddoes said. \u201cAnd each one of those is monumental. Each one of those is the biggest shock probably in our lifetimes. But collectively, they\u2019re an incredibly big set of shocks for all of us around the world.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Beddoes was one of the conference\u2019s main speakers.
