Former Pittsburgh Steelers<\/a> quarterback and franchise legend Ben Roethlisberger has weighed-in on how the Steelers should approach the hiring of their next head coach.<\/p>\n

The Steelers are in the market for a new lead man after former head coach Mike Tomlin decided to step away<\/a> from his position on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

On his “Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger”<\/a> podcast, the former Steelers signal-caller revealed he wants the team to hire an offensive-minded head coach.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not just saying it because I\u2019m an offensive guy. But we\u2019ve had defensive head coaches here that specialized in defense. And I get it Pittsburgh, I understand that Steelers football is about defense and running the ball, but why not mix it up?” Roethlisberger asked.<\/p>\n

“Why not bring in a head coach that\u2019s offensive minded that would kind of change it up? Because, listen, let\u2019s be honest, six points is not enough points in a playoff game,” Big Ben added. “You can\u2019t do that. Let\u2019s bring in a head coach that\u2019s offensively minded and allow him to then bring in a defensive coordinator.”<\/p>\n

Hiring an offensive-minded coach would be a departure from the norm for the Steelers, as each of their last three head coaches were defensive-minded.<\/p>\n

We agree with Big Ben here, but the Steelers can’t hire just any offensive-minded coach.<\/p>\n

What the Steelers need is a fresh, modern take on the offensive side of the ball, which means hiring a young coordinator as opposed to a retread like Mike McCarthy, for example.<\/p>\n

McCarthy’s a fine coach, but we’re not convinced he would move this team’s offense in the direction it needs to go.<\/p>\n
