Hughes, 74, of Scranton, died Wednesday afternoon at Allied Services Hospice Center. He is survived by his wife and best friend, Helene Smith Hughes.

Born in Scranton, son of the late Frank R. and Mildred Langan Hughes, he was a graduate of Dunmore High School Class of 1969 and went on to the University of Scranton for undergraduate studies and later to obtain his MBA in finance.

Extremely patriotic, Tom also embraced global cultures and traveling, having been able to see all seven continents with Helene, whom he deemed his only kid. He loved sampling local beers and spirits wherever he went, whether it be locally or destinations around the world. When he wasn’t globetrotting, he enjoyed playing golf at the Elmhurst Country Club.

Above all, he adored his family and took great pride in their accomplishments, but found his greatest joy in the times spent with Helene. He, in turn, was equally cherished by those closest to him. Tom fought to the end, and though he now rests in heaven, his fighting spirit lives on.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two nieces and four nephews, and five great-nieces and great-nephews, shared between his and Helene’s side of the family; as well as his sister-in-law, Abigail Smith; and a host of friends.

He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Leo and Robert Hughes; his parents-in-law, Murray and Muriel Moonie Stone Smith, whom he loved as if they were his own; his brother-in-law Herb Smith; and sister-in-law Fern Ellen Smith Tepper.

The funeral will be Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with services by Tom’s loyal friend, Fr. John Victoria, and Rabbi Daniel Swartz.

Family and friends may pay their respects from 11 a.m. until the time of service, beginning promptly at 1 p.m.

Interment will follow in the Shoemaker Cemetery, Dalton.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that contributions in Tom’s memory be made to the following organizations: The Jewish National Fund (1-800-542-8733) which plants trees in Israel thus ensuring that as each tree grows, his spirit will continue to live on; as well as Allied Services Hospice, 100 Abington Executive Park, Clarks Summit, PA 18411.

To offer a condolence, visit www.NEPAfuneralhome.com.

Thomas J.
