ROBESONIA, Pa. – Police say 65-year-old Sherry Yoh of North Heidelberg Township was struck and killed Wednesday evening while crossing West Penn Avenue near South Brooke Street in Robesonia.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m still kind of shook that this happened,\u201d said neighbor Michelle Garcia-Diaz.<\/p>\n
The Berks County Coroner says Yoh died from blunt force trauma, and her death has been ruled accidental. Police say the driver stopped at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. No charges have been filed at this time.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you can see over there, there\u2019s a sign that has things saying that people cross the street,\u201d said Darian, who lives in the area. \u201cBut over here, nobody listens to those signs.\u201d<\/p>\n
Just steps away from where the crash happened is Lori\u2019s Candy Station.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was devastated to hear about that,\u201d said owner Lori Brown.<\/p>\n
Brown has owned the candy shop since 1997 and says she\u2019s seen traffic change dramatically over the years.<\/p>\n
\u201cI grew up in town here. So I\u2019ve seen the changes over the last 60 years, and traffic is terrible,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
She says people cross West Penn Avenue every day, and even when they do everything right, it can still feel unsafe.<\/p>\n
\u201cI always make sure traffic has stopped even though the light\u2019s red, because you can\u2019t assume they\u2019re going to stop. Everybody tries to beat the light,\u201d Brown said.<\/p>\n
Now, she hopes this tragedy leads to a larger conversation about safety in the area.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have new council members that were just elected, so I\u2019m sure they\u2019ll be looking at this,\u201d Brown said. \u201cI don\u2019t know what the answer is, but I think the conversation needs to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n
