Thursday was
\nthe first Georgetown City Council meeting for new Mayor Jay Doyle and new
\ncouncil members Hobson Henry Milton, Sharon Melton and Jessie Walker.
An overflow
\ncrowd was in attendance \u2013 so much so that the 120-person limit was reached and
\nsome people were not allowed inside the meeting room.
The first
\naction item was a 4-3 split vote with the new members voting \u201cyes\u201d and he returning
\nmembers \u2013 Bruce Carl, Tamika Williams-Obeng, and Erin Ethridge \u2013 voting \u201cno.\u201d
At issue was
\nfirst reading on an ordinance that \u2013 if passed at second reading \u2013 will put in
\nplace a 180 moratorium on rezoning of any parcel, subdivision of any parcel
\ninto more than three parcels, or consideration of zoning variances in the city
\nof Georgetown.
On April 17,
\n2025, the City Council of the City of Georgetown adopted the 2040 Comprehensive
\nPlan for the City of Georgetown, including the Future Land Use Maps. Then on December
\n18, 2025, the City Council adopted a 291-page Unified Development Ordinance
\n(UDO) for the consolidation of zoning powers and uses within the City, repealing
\nthe City of Georgetown Zoning Ordinance, the City of Georgetown Land
\nDevelopment Regulations, and the City of Georgetown Architectural Review Board
\nDesign Guidelines.
The
\nordinance says during the moratorium, the city will receive professional review
\nof the Comprehensive Plan, to be used as a guide for review of the UDO.
During Thursday\u2019s
\nmeeting, former councilman Jonathan Angner said the studies being proposed have
\nalready been done:
Later in the
\nmeeting, a motion was made to pass the ordinance, and it received a second.
\nWilliams-Obeng tried unsuccessfully to get the vote delayed to council could receive
\nmore information.
Carl also
\nspoke about why he voted \u201cno.\u201d
Second
\nreading will take place in February. <\/p>\n
