Good old mead \u2014 a very ancient-sounding drink, right? Especially when we invoke it with old stories<\/a> like Odin of Asgard or the poem \u201cBeowulf.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWine made from honey,\u201d as Melody Stout described it. And, if you\u2019re in the mood for that kind of drink, she and her husband Kyle are ready to serve it as new owners of a mead business with a new location near the Lehigh Valley.<\/p>\n

The Stouts are the new owners of Space Time Mead & Cider Works, which opened a new location in early November at the Quakertown Farmers Market at 201 Station Road, Unit 217, in Richland Township.<\/p>\n

Customers can sit down to enjoy mead and cider, sample drinks and purchase bottles at the market.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the complexity that honey adds to a drink is really remarkable,\u201d Melody Stout said. \u201cIt adds flavor, it adds a mouthfeel to it. It adds kind of a depth to the drink that other wines might not have. It\u2019s often sweet and I like sweet things generally, although it can be dry as well. And it\u2019s just the way that the beverage is formulated, I don\u2019t know, agrees with me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Melody was assistant township manager for East Cocalico Township, Lancaster County, before leaving to oversee the business full time. Kyle still works as a sales representative for Arbor Fence Co.<\/p>\n

The couple have been brewing mead and participating in competitions for years, but until now were unable to sell their drinks.<\/p>\n

\u201cMelody really enjoys mead making and I\u2019m someone who loves marketing, so it kind of both went together,\u201d Kyle said. \u201cAnd Melody was saying for a while \u2026 \u2018I think I can make mead the rest of my life.\u2019 \u201c<\/p>\n

Melody said they were planning to open their own business, but while buying equipment from Space Time founder Dan Schreffler, he offered them a chance to take over.<\/p>\n

Schreffler opened Space Time in 2018 at 419 S. Blakely St. in Dunmore, Lackawanna County, where the business will also continue to operate. It was meant to be a relaxed retirement business, but it ended up taking up more time then he anticipated.<\/p>\n

The transaction for Space Time ownership hasn\u2019t finalized yet, but Schreffler hopes for the Stouts become majority owners by the end of the year, calling them \u201cfantastic mead makers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s other things I want to do,\u201d Schreffler said, even though he plans to help and still make mead occasionally.\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

Melody Stout said the Quakertown Farmers Market location is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The Dunmore location is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. most Saturdays, and will expand to 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday in February.<\/p>\n

Winter restaurant weeks are back in several Lehigh Valley communities.<\/p>\n

Easton Restaurant Week runs Jan. 18-24, <\/a>Winter Restaurant Week in Historic Downtown Bethlehem<\/a> is Jan. 25-31, East Penn Restaurant Week<\/a> is Feb. 22-28 and Slate Belt Restaurant Week<\/a> March 2-8.<\/p>\n

In addition, the seventh annual Emmaus Soup Crawl is on from noon to 4 p.m. Feb. 7. Sample soups from participants including Yergey Brewing, Grandpa Joe\u2019s Candy Shop and Green Earth Marketplace.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s event includes two separate trails; tickets are available on the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce website<\/a>. A maximum of 100 tickets are available for each trail.<\/p>\n

In other soup news, the 16th annual Souper Bowl will occur at 1 p.m. Feb. 1 at the Musikfest Caf\u00e9 at SteelStacks in Bethlehem. Local chefs will showcase their best soups in this culinary competition.<\/p>\n
