\t\t\tOBITUARY\t\t<\/p>\n
Janet E. Slater passed away at home in Brecknock Township, Berks County, on<\/p>\n
December 31, 2025 at the age of 76 years.<\/p>\n
She was born on April 5, 1949 in York, Pennsylvania the daughter of Lawrence and<\/p>\n
Ruth (Lauer) Serff.<\/p>\n
Jan graduated in June of 1967 from York\u2019s William Penn Senior High School and then<\/p>\n
earned Bachelor of Science Degree from The Pennsylvania State University in June of<\/p>\n
1971.<\/p>\n
Janet\u2019s career included working in Environmental Education for the PA Bureau of State<\/p>\n
Parks and later working at several garden centers and volunteering for the Hawk<\/p>\n
Mountain Sanctuary\u2019s semiannual Native Plant Sale. Jan also volunteered at Rock<\/p>\n
Hollow Woods Environmental Learning Center and served on its board of Directors.<\/p>\n
Jan was a gardener and especially interested in native plants and their relationship to<\/p>\n
birds and other wildlife. Jan was a longtime member of the Baird Ornithological Club<\/p>\n
and Mengel Natural History Society both of Berks County, PA.<\/p>\n
Another passion of Jan\u2019s was reading and to support reading and education, she was a<\/p>\n
weekly volunteer at the Adamstown Public Library.<\/p>\n
Jan is survived by her husband of 40 years, Robert Michael (Mike) Slater, her sister<\/p>\n
Diane (Serff) Jablonski, brother David Serff, her nephew Gregg Jablonski and niece<\/p>\n
Susanne (Jablonski) Walker.<\/p>\n
A private memorial and interment will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers the family<\/p>\n
requests that friends consider a donation to Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, Kempton, PA or<\/p>\n
