(WBEN) &#8211; Forecast confidence is increasing as a weather system sets the stage for a lake effect snow event across the Western New York region, with the bullseye being across much of the more populated areas of Erie County.<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"www.audacy.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkh6jguv000j357vb5uny2m6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--station\">A Winter Storm Warning has been posted for ALL of WNY, with the exception of Allegany County, Sunday evening through Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Light lake effect snow will fall northeast of both Lake Erie and Lake Ontario today and tonight. Lake effect snow will become better organized and heavier starting late tonight into Monday morning. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ZFg5mFV2oi\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">pic.twitter.com\/ZFg5mFV2oi<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 NWS Buffalo (@NWSBUFFALO) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NWSBUFFALO\/status\/2012825215231832412?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">January 18, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"www.audacy.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkda3ft1003i357v0a07n84a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--station\">&#8220;The snow really won&#8217;t become better organized until later on tonight,&#8221; National Weather Service meteorologist Steve Welch tells WBEN.  &#8220;It starts to pick up in intensity, especially tomorrow(Monday) morning.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"www.audacy.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkd9pbv60021357v6px9zxbj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--station\">Blowing and drifting snow will be a potentially significant issue during the period in spots where the lake effect sets up.<\/p>\n<p>        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/SundayMonday-2c8763d2-0f94-4fe2-9c0f-e2e462d42e92.jpg\" alt=\"Buffalo weather\"\/><\/p>\n<p>      Photo credit AccuWeather.com<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"www.audacy.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkgrbtt6000r357vmkxf3cnv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--station\">NWS forecasters say the current placement of the lake band looks to be mainly northeast of the lake Monday morning with a southward shift of the band through the late morning and into the afternoon.<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"www.audacy.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkjn22t9000p357va9zs0qiw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--station\">The lake band will then focus east of the lake, over the central and southern portions of Erie County, far northwestern Chautauqua &amp; Cattaraugus counties and most of Wyoming County through most of the day Tuesday with some oscillations north.<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"www.audacy.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkjnmu0m000d357vn3741bk1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--station\">&#8220;That lake band will start out and become better organized northeast of Lake Erie, even as far north as Niagara County during the (Monday) morning timeframe, and then in the afternoon that lake band will drop south and will focus over central-southern Erie County, such as the southtowns and slightly south of there,&#8221; Welch adds.<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"www.audacy.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkjn2eat000t357v69h3kswh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--station\">The band will slowly shift north late Tuesday into Tuesday night, and then dissipate Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"www.audacy.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkjn30il0011357v4ewephen@published\" data-editable=\"text\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--station\">Accumulations<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"www.audacy.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkjn2x8c000x357vvn4jv0qv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--station\">The main strip of greatest snowfall amounts looks to be across the Buffalo Southtowns into NW Wyoming and SW Genesee counties where up to 20 inches of snow is expected. Outside of these areas, a solid 6 to 12 inches is possible for far northern and southern Erie County and extreme northwest Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties.<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"www.audacy.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkjn3wbz0016357vhcan5ar7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--station\">Snowfall rates of up to 2 inches per hour will be possible at times with this lake effect band, including as it drops south across the Buffalo metro area and far northern Erie County on Monday morning.<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"www.audacy.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkjn54cd001a357vp539tdo3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--station\">Frigid<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"www.audacy.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkjn5jsr001f357v2406b9z8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--station\">Temperatures Monday night will lower towards zero inland and to the single digits near the Lakes. Brisk westerly winds will result in wind chills of 10 below to 20 below Monday night. The western Southern Tier is the area most likely to feel sub -15 wind chills.
